1 Salif Keita

Salif Keita was born on 8th December 1946. He is a Malian retired football player who played as a striker. He was born in Bamako and just at 20 years old Keita left for France to join AS Saint-Etienne where he won three consecutive Ligue 1 titles. In 1970 he was voted African footballer of the year. He later joined fellow league side Olympique de Marseille in the 1972 summer. The club tried to force him to assume French nationality but he opposed it and left the season.

Salif Keita was nicknamed the black pearl of Mali because of his outstanding skills in soccer and his love for his country. He retired at the age of 34. His bibliography is available in 20 different languages on Wikipedia, as of 2019.

2 Youma Diakite

Youma was born on 1st May 1971. She is a Malian model Actress television personality and showgirl, mainly active in Italy, Popularly known as Naomi because she resembles Naomi Campbel, Youma was born in Mali and raised in Paris. She became popular at the age of 18 when she was chosen by the Bennetton group as a spokesmodel for an advertising campaign. Moved to Italy in 1998 and was a runway model for notable brands including Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and Versace

.She also appeared in various Tv shows one of them being John Wick, an action film. Youma is also an international political activist against racism.

3 Rokia Traore

Rokia Traore is a singer-songwriter and a guitarist from Mali. She was born on 24th January 1974 and is a member of the Bambara ethnic group. Rokia made six albums between 1998 and 2016. Her first album which was released in late 1997 in Mali and on 1st September 1998 in Europe won a lot of favours both locally and internationally. It sold over 40000 copies in Europe.

Bowmboi won the Critics Award category at the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World music in 2004.Tchamantche (2008) won victoires de la Musique World Music Album of the year in 2009.

4 Ibrahim Boubacar Keita

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita is known by his initials IBK. He was a Malian politician who was born on 29th January 1945 and served as the president of Mali from September 2013 to August 2020. His bibliography has been translated into 55 different languages. He died on 16th January 2022.

He served as Mali鈥檚 prime minister from February 1994 to February 2000 and as president of the National Assembly of Mali from September 2002 to September 2007. Some of the awards he won include the National Order of Mali, the National Order of Ivory Coast and the Order of the Republic of Serbia.

His riches came as a result of mining gold and salt deposits in the Mali Empire along with the slaves and trade of ivory Musa expanded the borders of Mali and added the cities of GAO and Timbuktu into his territory. Musa’s reign is one with projects construction and power. He is considered one of the most prestigious politicians in history.

6 Aissata Cisse

Aissata Cisse was born in 1945 to a Dogon Mother and a Peulh father. She began her career as a radio journalist and soon became a T.V presenter despite having studied secretarial studies in Poland. What made her so good at her job was her 鈥淕olden Voice鈥. She presented the news on Malian national Radio and Television from 1959 until her retirement in 2007.

She lent her voice to the National answering machine of the Malian Post and Telecommunications from the 19770s. Her voice was also used for many different commercials. After she retired the newsroom of the national radio was renamed in her name. She died in 2022 but was considered to have played a major part in the country of Mali.

7 Ali Farka Tore

Ali Farka Tore is not only one of the famous people from Mali but is also considered a music legend worldwide. He was born on 31st October 1939. He is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Mali. Because of his outstanding talent, he was able to be nominated for the Grammys award and he won.

Toure was ranked number 76 on the rolling stones list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time” and number 37 on Spine Magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of all time 鈥淗e is considered an African pioneer and is one of Africa’s most internationally renowned musicians.

8 Amadou Hampate Ba

He was a Malian writer, historian and ethnologist. He was also an influential figure in the 20th century in African Literature and cultural heritage Amadou is famously known for saying ‘Whenever an old man dies is as though a library was burning down.

He was a champion of African oral tradition and traditional week. He was born around the year 1900/1901 and died on13th May 1991. During his last days and retirement period, he spent his time working on classifying the archives of West African Oral tradition that he had accumulated throughout his lifetime.

9 Koman Coulibaly

Koman Coulibaly is a Malian referee .He is one of Mali鈥檚 most experienced officials and has been a full international referee for FIFA since 1999. He officiated his first international match on April 19th 2000. The match was between Mali and Burkina Faso

Koman, having been selected for five African Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2010 FIFA world cup is considered a full-time referee. He is not only prominent in Africa but also international. He gained international recognition when he became the subject of international press coverage after officiating the 2010 World Cup Match between the US and Slovenia where he called a disputed foul that neglected an 85th-minute play in which Maurice Edu put the ball into the Slovenian goal.

10 Seydou Keita

Seydou Keita was born on 16th January 1980. He was a versatile midfielder and operated as both a central and defensive midfielder. He played for Lens for five seasons, Barcelona (four) winning fourteen titles with the latter club after signing in 2008,

He started his youth career in Mali but his professional career would take him to different countries including France, Spain, China Italy and Qatar. He held a French passport and had represented Mali in different games and tournaments since the age of 18.
