Malta may be overlooked in favor of other bigger islands, but people are truly missing out! Although we love how this island is still considered an undiscovered gem, Malta deserves more credit. With crystal blue waters, friendly locals, cute towns, seaside resorts, and an endless list of things to do, it is no wonder that Malta is slowly rising on the must-see list for tourists in 2022.

But what can you do on the island? What are the people like?

The one thing that you can rest assured of when you visit Malta is the friendly and welcoming culture! Since Malta has not been prone to millions of tourists in recent years, they are still amazed to see foreigners — meaning they love helping you, chatting for a bit, or just waving as you pass by their beautiful stone cottage.

Let’s check out a few facts about the heartwarming Maltese people and why this tiny island country should be at the top of your must-visit list.

Lots of the Maltese personally know each other

Since the country is so tiny, it is a common conception that most Maltese people know one another. Although this may not be the case directly, it probably is indirectly. The island is so small, and people know of people, know their families, or have third or fourth connections. Although it is a bit of an exaggeration that everyone knows each other, it is probably true that everyone has heard of one another – just like a small, rural town in the United States!

Maltese people support English or Italian football

The second thing to keep in mind about the Plates is that they enjoy English or Italian football. Do you love watching Manchester city in the Premier League? What about Juventus in Italian football? If so, chances are the Maltese also enjoy watching a game of footy, talking about Jack Grealish, and cheering on England or Italy in the World Cup.

Feasts are joyous occasions, but small-town rivalries can still rear their ugly head! Maltese people are great at celebrating and partying. However, sometimes this fanaticism can cause two people who used to be friends to be supporting different patron saints — which can lead to some awkward tension!

They love to drive

For a very tiny country, there are a LOT of cars on this island! You might wonder why – after all, the island is so small, why does everyone need a car? At just 316 kilometers of land, it may seem like there is no need for a car since you can probably bike, walk, or take public transportation everywhere. However, as a nation, the Maltese Are considered to be slightly lazy — they love to drive to get from Point A to Point B without any hassle. Who can blame them?

Why would you leave home?

Just like you may find in rural Scotland or Ireland, the Maltese teenagers and young adults have no need to leave their “ family home house” until after they are married. Why would they spend extra money to move out — especially if they are just moving down the road from their parents anyway?

In Malta, religion is still a big deal. In fact, there are 359 churches on this tiny island — almost one every day of the year!

If you think that speaking English is a remarkable feat, just imagine speaking three languages fluently. If so, you may get a feel for what it is like to be Maltese. Up until around 20 years ago, very few people spoke English in Malta. However, with the influence of television and the internet, the Maltese people learned English and Italian through TV shows and cartoons.

Turn Eurovision on the TV!

Just like everyone in Europe, the Maltese people LOVE Eurovision. I mean, it really is good entertainment. With tiny countries like Iceland taking the cake some years, it is no wonder that the Maltese people love seeing languages from other countries and tiny nations making a significant impact in the world.

They chose to be British

Okay, so maybe not outright choose to be British, but they had no qualms about being considered a British colony. Similar to how Cyprus is regarded as a nation under the United Kingdom, the Maltese didn’t have any issue with the British taking over their tiny island.

There are more Maltese people in Australia than there are in Malta. It is funny that this tiny island nation chooses to visit the Outback, but maybe they just want to move from one of the smallest countries to one of the biggest countries in the world!
