Mexico has embraced the sport, with new players enrolling to play professional basketball instead of traditional sports such as football and boxing. The country has produced some of the best basketball players in the world, with the majority of them going on to achieve great success in their respective careers.

The surge of talented basketball players is due to the nation’s support and providence from sports teams across the country, with programs that are essential for developing talents from a young age becoming the norm in the country. These players mature as they learn the fundamentals of the game, allowing them to reach the pinnacle of their game before even beginning to play professionally. These players, endowed with the ability to perform at the highest levels, have gone on to excel both domestically and internationally. Here are 15 of the best Mexican basketball players.

1. Adam Parada

Adam Parada is a Mexican former professional basketball player. He played most notably as an import in the Philippine Basketball Association for the Alaska Aces. He played four years at the University of California, Irvine, but was not drafted by any team in the 2004 NBA Draft. He became a mainstay of the Mexico national team. He first played as an import for the Red Bull Barako in 2008 and led the Barako to a third-place finish, becoming the first Latin American reinforcement in an Asian league.

2. Eduardo N谩jera

Eduardo N谩jera is a Mexican retired professional basketball player. N谩jera was only the second Mexican-born NBA player and was the first Mexican player to be drafted. He was drafted 38th overall in round 2 of the 2000 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets. He played for the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets and the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA. He currently scouts for the Dallas Mavericks and is also a pregame and postgame analyst on Mavericks Live on Fox Sports Southwest. 

3. Edgar Garibay

Edgar Garibay is a Mexican basketball player who signed for the KB Peja of the Kosovo Basketball Superleague on January 13, 2022. He represents the Mexico national basketball team and was a vital part of the team where he was part of the team that competed in the 2015 Pan-American Games for men, the Panama 2016 Centrobaskt Championship and the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament that was held in Turin, Italy.

4. Horacio Llamas

Horacio Llamas is a Mexican retired professional basketball player. He spent two NBA seasons with the Phoenix Suns, making NBA history as the first player born in Mexico. Llamas competed in international competitions like the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games, which were held in Ponce, Puerto Rico, as the starting centre for the Mexican national basketball team. He was a crucial member of the Mexican basketball squad that competed in various events like the Centrobasket, the FIBA COCABA Championship, and the FIBA Americas Championship.

5. Gustavo Ay贸n

Gustavo Ay贸n is a Mexican former professional basketball player who stands at a height of 6ft 10 in and played centre position during his time as an active player. He went undrafted in the 2007 NBA draft and continued to play for Halcones de Xalapa of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. He played for New Orleans Hornets, Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks during his stint in the NBA.

He last played for the Capitanes de Arecibo of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional. He represents the senior Mexican national basketball team in international team competitions and his exploits playing have earned him two All-Euro League Second Team selections.

6. Juan Toscano-Anderson

Juan Toscano-Anderson is a Mexican-American professional basketball player for the Utah Jazz of the NBA. The Utah Jazz acquired Juan in a trade on February 9, 2023. On February 15, he made his team debut. He represented the Marquette Golden Eagles in collegiate basketball. He has starred on many teams throughout his illustrious career the most notable ones being Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and currently the Utah Jazz.

He won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2022. At the 2016 FIBA World Olympic qualifying event in Turin, Italy, Toscano-Anderson was a standout for the Mexican national basketball team.

7. Jorge Gutierrez

Jorge Guti茅rrez is a Mexican professional basketball player for Libertadores de Quer茅taro of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. He spent three seasons in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Charlotte Hornets after playing collegiate basketball for the California Golden Bears. At the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship, Guti茅rrez made his basketball debut for the Mexican national team. He later went on to play for Mexico at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, scoring 9.2 points on average.

8. Romel Beck

Mexican basketball player Romel Beck most recently competed for Aguacateros de Michoacan of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional from 2016 to 2017. He also competed in basketball for the Mexican national team. During the 2007 FIBA Americas Tournament, Beck most famously crossed over Kobe Bryant and scored a remarkable four-point shot against the USA Men’s basketball guard. Beck has played in Italy before with Varese and Pierrel Capo d’Orlando.

Romel played for the Florida Flame for one season after being selected in the first round of the NBDL Draft. Beck competed in college sports at UNLV. At the 2009 NBA Summer League, he was a standout player for the San Antonio Spurs. Beck was the Dakota Wizards’ top scorer in the NBA Development League. He played for Bnei Herzliya in the Israeli Basketball Super League during the 2012鈥13 season. He was a memeber of Leones de Ponce in Puerto Rico over the summer of 2013.

9. Omar Quintero

Omar Quintero plays basketball professionally in Venezuela. The Mexican currently competes in the Venezuelan League with Gigantes de Guayana. He played for the senior Mexican national basketball team as well. Quintero’s professional career has brought him to the Spanish League and Venezuelan League in addition to local teams in Mexico.

He participated in the EuroLeague during the 2004鈥05 season with the Spanish team TAU Ceramica when he came off the bench to contribute nine points in two games. He featured in the Cariduros de Fajardo team of the Puerto Rican BSN division in 2008. He played in 2009 with the Venezuelan League team Gigantes de Guayana. Quintero had a lengthy career playing basketball for Mexico’s senior national team.

10. V铆ctor 脕vila

Victor 脕vila is a Mexican basketball player who most recently played for the Caballeros de Culiac谩n of the CIBACOPA league. 脕vila also participated in the LNBP for Halcones UV Xalapa since the CIBACOPA only lasted for a few months of the year. Avila has played basketball professionally during his career in Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Czech Republic, and the United States. He regularly played for Mexico’s national basketball team.

Paul Stoll is a Mexican basketball player who competes in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional for Libertadores de Quer茅taro. He participated in collegiate basketball for the University of Texas-Pan American and Lansing Community College. He plays basketball for Mexico’s national team. Stoll helped the Mexico team win the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship and the gold medal, which enabled them to qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

12. Gabriel Gir贸n

Mexican professional basketball player Gabriel Giron plays for Libertadores de Quer茅taro in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. He played for the Fuerza Regia team that won the 2017 Mexican championship and competed for Mexico in the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualification Tournament which was held in Turin, Italy.

13. Pedro Meza

Former Mexican basketball player Pedro David Meza last competed for the Capitanes de Ciudad de M茅xico and the Mineros de Zacatecas. He competed in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup starring on the Mexican national team internationally.

14. Marco Ramos

Marco Ramos is a professional basketball player from Mexico who plays shooting guard and small forward for the Dorados de Chihuahua of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. He also represents Mexico’s national basketball team, with whom he competed in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

15. Francisco Cruz

Francisco Sald铆var is a Mexican professional basketball player who most recently played for Turkish Basketbol S眉per Ligi club Manisa B眉y眉k艧ehir Belediyespor. Sald铆var also plays for Mexico’s senior national basketball team. He attended Wyoming University and played NCAA Division I basketball. Francisco represented Mexico at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship. He also competed in the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Turin and the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup, winning a bronze medal and being nominated to the All-Tournament Team.
