20 Most Famous Mexican Female Singers


 

Music has been a core element in an otherwise diverse Mexican culture for years. Since the beginning of the last century, Mexico has been producing some of the best pop stars in the world but it was not until the mid-20th century that Mexican female singers came into the scene.

The first female singers appeared in the Mexican music scene in the 1950s, which opened the door for other female singers to follow suit. Today, there are hundreds of successful Mexican female singers who continue to produce a wide range of musical genres.

In this article let鈥檚 look at some of the Most Famous Mexican Female Singers  

1. Lola Beltran

Popularly known as “Lola the Great”, Lola Betran was one of Mexico’s most acclaimed singers. With her expressive vocals, she introduced Ranchera and Huapango music from the barrios of Mexico into the international stage.

Lola became internationally known for her interpretation of the songs “Cucurrucuc煤 Paloma” and “Paloma Negra” initially done by the re-known singer Tomas Mendez. Her international fame skyrocketed a few years later after she performed for various world leaders including Queen Elizabeth II, President JF Kennedy, and French President Charles de Gaulle, among others.

Betran was the first Ranchera singer to perform at Mexico鈥檚 Palace of arts, the concert hall, and the premier opera house. She also performed at the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, the Olympia Music Hall in Paris, and the Conservatory in Saint Petersburg.

Lola died in 1996, soon after recording her last album together with Lucha Villa and Amalia Mendoza, but she still remains one of the most famous and successful Mexican female Singers of all time. 

2. Thalia

Often referred to as the “Queen of Latin Pop”, Thal铆a Sodi Miranda, simply known as Thalia is a Mexican pop music singer. She is regarded as one of the most successful and influential Mexican female artists of all time.

Born on 26 August 1971 in Mexico City, Thalia started to sing at the age of 9 years when she was incorporated as a vocalist in a children’s group named Pac-Man. She released her first album as a solo artist in 1990, from which some of the songs became instant radio hits.

Since then, she has gone on to release eighteen studio albums, twenty-four compilation albums, two live albums, and seventy singles. Additionally, Thalia has sold over 25 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling Latin music artists of all time.

Aside from her native Spanish, Thal铆a has also sung in English, French, Portuguese, and Tagalog, which has enabled her to reach a wide range of audiences across the globe.

3. Paulina Rubio

Popularly known as “The Golden Girl” or the “Queen Popstar鈥, Paulina Susana Rubio is one of the most famous pop singers in Mexico today. She first came into the Mexican pop music scene in 1982 as a member of the then-sensational pop group by the name Timbiriche. 

She released her first album La Chica Dorada in 1992 and she has gone on to release eleven studio albums, fifteen compilation albums, 62 singles, and ten promotional singles.

Over the cause of her career, Paulino Rubio has sold over 15 million records, making her one of the best-selling Mexican female singers of all time. She is also regarded as one the most influential female Mexican artist and is the third most followed Mexican person on Twitter.

4. Jenni Rivela

Named by Billboard magazine as the “top Latin artist of 2013” and the “best-selling Latin artist of 2013”, Jenni Rivela is one of the best-selling regional Mexican artists of all time.

She started her music career in the 1990s but her popularity soared after she won the  Regional Mexican Female Artist of the Year award in 2007, which she won nine consecutive times. 

Before her death in a plane crash in 2012 aged 43 years old, Jenni Rivela had released eleven studio albums, thirteen live albums, three compilation albums, and 33 singles. Her music has also sold more than 20 million records worldwide, making her the highest-earning Mexican singer of all time.

Over the course of her career which spanned close to two decades, she was awarded two Billboard Music Awards,  twenty-two Billboard Latin Music Awards, and received four Latin Grammy nominations, making her one the most successful Mexican female singers of all time.

5. Paulina G贸mez Torres

Known professionally as Paulina Goto, Paulina G贸mez Torres is a famous Mexican pop singer and a former member of the popular Mexican-Argentine pop group, Eme 15. She first gained popularity when she acted in a popular Mexican television seriesNi帽a de mi Coraz贸n in 2010. 

She signed a contract with Sony Music Mexico to record and sell her music in 2010, and her first single entitled Mio was released in the same year.  The single received over 39,000 plays on the radio within weeks of its release which instantly propelled her to a pop idol among young Mexican pop lovers.

She released her debut album on 22 June 2010 and it charted at number 7 on Mexico’s Top Album charts for iTunes during the first week of its release. She later joined a group of other singers to form the Eme 15 pop band, which became very successful, with their debut album being certified gold in Argentina and platinum in Mexico. 

6. Dulce Maria

Regarded as one of the most influential female artists on social media, Dulce Mar铆a is a 37 years old Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, and author. She began her music career at age 5 when she joined the Mexican music group K.I.D.S., which was very popular among children. 

Dulce Maria reached the international stage as a member of the Mexican Latin pop group, RBD, which was very successful from 2004 until its break up in 2009.  During that period the group sold over 15 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling Latin music bands of all time.

After the group broke up, Maria started her solo music career in 2009 and up to date, she has released four studio albums, one EP, 23 singles, 14 music videos, and two lyric videos.

She has also won several international music awards including   MTV Europe Music Award and was also named one of the most beautiful female artists by People en Espa帽ol magazine.

7. Anahi

Anahi is one of the most famous Mexican female pop singers in the world today. She broke into the international scene in 2004 after starring in Rebelde and being part of the group RBD, which sold over 15 million records worldwide.

She released her first album as a solo artist at the age of 10 and has gone on to release additional five albums which have all been featured on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart.

Over her not-long career as a solo artist, Anahi has sold over five million albums worldwide and she is the best-selling RBD member in the United States. Apart from Spanish, which is her main singing language,  she also sings in English, Portuguese, and Italian.

8. Grolia Trevi

Often dubbed the “Madonna of Mexico”, Grolia Trevi is a Mexican singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, television hostess, music video director, and businesswoman. She has been in the Mexican music industry for almost 40 years and she is viewed as a role model to the upcoming pop music artists. 

Gloria was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Le贸n, Mexico 54 years ago. She released her debut album in 1989 and Since then, she has released 10 more studio albums, four live albums, and seventy singles. 

She has also sold over 35 million records worldwide and has performed in many sold-out arenas and stadiums across Latin America, making her one of the most successful Mexican female artists of all time.

9. Lucero

Popularly referred to as  “The Americas’ sweetheart”, Lucero is a multi-platinum pop star in Mexico and has received nominations for the best Mexican female artist of the year three times.

Lucero was born in Mexico City 53 years ago and began her music career as a children’s entertainer before she released a series of successful music albums in the early and mid-1980s. Some of her songs were very well received and went on to top most of the Latin music charts including the Billboard charts in the USA.

Over the cause of her long successful music career, Lucero has released 20 studio albums, two live albums, 40 music videos, and 74 singles which have so far sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Her success in the music industry together with her other works in television has made her one of the most popular female artists in Mexico. 

10. Margo Rey

Margo Reymundo or Margo Rey as she likes to call herself is a successful and one of the most famous female Mexican singers. She was born in Acapulco, Mexico but her family moved to the United States where she still lives today.

Margo began her Music career as a lead vocalist in an all-female rock band in Arlington USA. She later became the bandleader of a Latin Jazz/R&B sextet called Miss Margo & The Lost Souls which released a very successful music album in the 1990s.

In 2009, she released her album My Heart’s Desire which received the 2009 Muse’s Muse award for Best Overall CD Project in Any Category. She calls her style of music “Organica”, an unorthodox hybrid of pop music that is rooted in jazz with deep ethnic-rhythmic grooves, textural guitars, keys, and lush vocals.

11. Maite Peroni

Maite Peroni started her music career as a member of a popular Mexican band named RBD. The group released a total of 9 studio albums, some in  Portuguese and  English languages. Other members of the group included popular Mexican pop artists like Anahi, Dulce Maria, and Christian Ch谩vez among others.

She started her solo music career in 2012 after signing a contract with Warner Music group and released her first album Eclipse de Luna the following year. The album was very successful and was once listed in the ninth position on the  Latin music Billboard. 

Today, with 8 million followers on Facebook, over 4 million on Twitter, more than 9 million on Instagram, and more than 2 million YouTube subscribers, Maite Perroni is one of the most influential Mexican female artists.

12. Yuri

Widely considered to be the “Queen of Latin Pop”, Yuri, is one of the few Latin singers of the 1980s who are still active in producing songs. This has been made possible by her ability to evolve and bring new ideas into her music. 

She began her career as a teenage singer but quickly established herself as one of the most popular pop music stars in Mexico and Latin America. She released her first album titled T煤 Iluminas mi Vida in 1978 and she has gone on to release a total of 29 studio albums which have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

Over the cause of her career, Yuri has never hidden her admiration for the world鈥檚 big artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson among others. Likewise,  she has been of big influence and a role model to many Hispanic pop music stars such as Mar铆a Jos茅, Alejandra Guzm谩n, and Shakira, among others.

13. Natalia Lafourcade

Known for her quality warm lyric soprano voice, Natalia Lafourcade is one of the most successful Mexican female singers in recent history. She was born into a family of Musicians and has been singing since she was 10 years old.

She released her first album, self-titled Natalia Lafourcade in 2002 and was nominated for a Latin Grammy award in the category of Best New Artist the following year.

Over the cause of her music career, Natalia has released 11 studio albums and has won several national and international awards including 15 Latin Grammys, 2 Grammy Awards, a Billboard award, and 3 MTV Awards, among others. 

14. Belinda

Often referred to as the “Princess of Latin Pop”, Belinda Peregr铆n is one of the most popular pop singers among the Mexican youth. She was born in Spain to a French-Spanish mother and a Spanish father, but her family moved to Mexico City when she was only 4 years old.

Belinda released her self-titled debut studio album, Belinda, in 2003. The album became an instant hit, selling over one million copies worldwide within the first few months of its release.

She released her second studio album Utopia in 2006, her third studio album Carpe Diem in 2010, and her fourth album Catarsis in 2013. Together, her studio albums, singles, and soundtracks have sold over 3 million copies making her one of the best-selling female Mexican female Singers.

15. Angela Aguilar

The Daughter of the famous American Singer Pepe Aguilar, Angela is a popular upcoming Mexican pop star. She first gained recognition after her stellar performance at the 19th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2019.

Her first solo album, Primero Soy Mexicana was released in 2018. It became very successful and as result, she was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards, making her one of the youngest artists ever to be nominated for the awards.

The album was produced by her father and consisted of eleven well-known ranchera songs previously done by other prominent music artists such as Lucha Villa, Rocio Durcal, and her own grandmother, Flor Silvestre.

On January 31, 2020, she released another album which is a special tribute to an American singer, Selena, titled Baila Esta Cumbia. Her third album, Mexicana Enamorada was released on September 24, 2021, and both albums are doing very well in the market. 

16. Carolina Ross

Carolina Ross is one of the most famous Mexican Female singers today. The 27 years old made her name through her youtube channel where she sings cover songs belonging to the top Latin American singers. She dropped her first original song Labios Tontos in 2021 and the song has been receiving a good reception.

Her beautiful face and flawless voice have gained her a massive following in Mexico and in other neighboring countries. Currently, she has over 3.5 million youtube subscribers making her one of the top Latin singers in the world.

17. A铆da Cuevas

Affectionately known as “The Queen of Ranchera Music鈥, A铆da Cuevas is one of the most famous Mexican female singers. She began singing at an early age but her big break came when she was contracted to sing in a weekly live radio program at the age of 12.

Her extraordinary singing talent led her to perform on the international stage across the globe. Her most popular songs are  El Pastor, La Cigarra, Te Doy Las Gracias, Te Vas a Quedar Con Las Ganas, Quiz谩s Ma帽ana, Traici贸n a Juan, and Me Equivoque Contigo.

Throughout her career she has recorded 40 albums, selling over ten million copies worldwide. Cuevas’ work has earned her one Grammy Award and one Latin Grammy Award.

18. Alejandra Guzman

With over 30 million albums sold throughout her career, and winning a Grammy award, Alejandra Guzm谩n is one of the most successful Mexican female singers. She was born on February 9, 1968, to actress Silvia Pinal and singer Enrique Guzm谩n which exposed her to the world of entertainment from an early age.

She began her music career in 1988 with a song Bye mama which was a special dedication to her mother and later released several other albums which were very successful. 

Guzman has also has done duets with Franco De Vita, Mario Domm, Fonseca, and one the most popular Mexican singer Gloria Trevi. She has also been labeled the 鈥淨ueen of Hearts鈥 due to her great achievements in the Mexican music industry.

19. Julieta Venegas

Julieta Venegas is one of the most consistent Mexican female Singers. She came into the Mexican music scene in 1997 with her debut album 础辩耻铆 which became very popular among Mexican rock music lovers.

She released her most successful album Lim贸n y Sal in 2006 which up to date has sold more than 6 million records. Throughout her career, Venegas has produced eight studio albums, one live album, one compilation album, and 16 singles, selling over 30 million records worldwide.

Apart from singing, the 52 years old Singer is also a successful songwriter, music producer, and instrumentalist. She plays 17 different musical instruments including acoustic guitar, accordion, and keyboard.

In 2012, Rolling Stone ranked her album Bueninvento third in its list of “The 10 Greatest Latin Rock Albums of All Time”. She was also described as “my biggest teacher鈥 by Natalia Lafourcade who is also one the greatest Mexican pop artists of all time.

20. Guadalupe Pineda

With almost Forty years in the music entertainment business, Guadalupe Pineda is considered one of Mexico’s grassroots musical icons.  She recorded her breakthrough hit “Yolanda” in 1984 and since then she has released more than 30 albums selling over 14 million records worldwide.

Apart from Spanish which is her primary singing language, she has also sung in French, Italian, English, and Hebrew. She has also covered various styles of music including ballads, mariachi, tango, ranchera, and opera among others.

Her voice is among the best-known in Mexico and has performed live concerts all over Mexico in other various countries in Europe and the Americas. In 2017, she was awarded the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award to honor her brilliant musical career and achievements.
