Although he is better known as Canelo, the world champion鈥檚 real name is Santos Sau鈥檒 脕lvarez Barraga鈥檔. The moniker was given to him by his coach, Eddy Reynoso.

Canelito, which in Mexican means 鈥淪mall Cinnamon,鈥� is where Canelo gets his name. His colourful appearance earned him the nickname Reynoso. It is understandable why boxing fight fans prefer to refer to him as Canelo rather than by his true name.

While it may not be the same in different parts of the world, Spanish culture and customs encourage you to adopt both a paternal and maternal family name as your own. His first name is in this case derived from the masculine word for 鈥淐innamon鈥� in Spanish. 

2. Canelo hails from a family of boxers

The Alvarez family takes great pleasure in their prizefighting. Before Canelo was born, they behaved in such a manner. Seven of his eight siblings are brothers. All of them have competed in professional boxing but Canelo 鈥� the youngest just so happens to be the most well-known. 

Rigoberto, Ricardo and Ramon 脕lvarez all have more than 30 professional victories to their names, although some of them never progressed past their debuts. 

While Ramon is still competing, the oldest Rigoberto has also claimed a WBA championship.

3. He started boxing when he was 13

脕lvarez started boxing when he was around 134 years old, after watching his elder brother Rigoberto debut as a professional boxer. In 2004, he won the silver medal at the Junior Mexican National Championships held in Sinaloa.

He became the 2005 Junior Mexican National champion in Tuxtia Guti茅rrez, Chiapas at the age of 15. His amateur record was 44-2 with 12 knockouts. 

4. Canelo joined boxing because he was bullied

Despite his family, Canelo had no initial intentions of becoming a boxer. However, that changed because of bullies in the barrio who teased him about his red hair as well as his freckles and his pale complexion.

Once he started learning how to box, the people who had once bullied him had a sudden change of mind, particularly once he started boxing in amateur matches throughout the local region. 

5. Canelo dropped out of high school to focus on boxing

Canelo turned professional at 15, shortly after his championship at the Junior Nationals, because his trainers at the time, father and son team Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, were unable to find suitable Junior opponents for him.

On the advice of Jose Reynoso, Canelo dropped out of high school to become a professional boxer in 2005, no more than months after his 15th birthday. In part, this is because he had the talent to rise to the top, meaning that it made sense for him to focus on making the most out of it. 

6. Canelo is famous for knocking out his opponents

Growing up on a farm, Canelo 脕lvarez learned how to ride horses. 

As a result, he remains an avid horse rider in the present, having received a pair of them from a Mexican pop star as well as the local mayor.
