Boxing is a sport comprising both amateur and professional, involving attack and defence with the fists. Boxers usually wear padded gloves and generally observe the code outlined in the marquess of Queensberry rules.

Matched in weight and ability, boxing contestants try to land blows hard and often with their fists, each attempting to avoid the blows of the opponent. A boxer wins a match either by outscoring the opponent’s points can be tallied in several ways or by rendering the opponent incapable of continuing the match.

One such renowned boxer is Julio Cesar Chavez. He is a famous Mexican professional boxer. He is known as the greatest boxer from Mexico. Julio C茅sar Ch谩vez amazed an entire generation of fans inside and outside the ring throughout his 25 years as an active boxer.

As a successful boxer, he is notable for his remarkable punching power and indomitable spirit for many years one of  most popular  figures.

Julio Cesar Chavez Gonzalez was born on 12th July 1962, in Obregon, Sonora, Mexico. He was one of ten children, with five sisters and four brothers.

1. Ch谩vez once lived in an abandoned train car

Chavez鈥檚 father, Rodolfo Chavez, used to work for the railroad and Chavez, along with his nine siblings (four brothers and five sisters), grew up in an abandoned railroad car. He was from a poor family and as a child, he saw his mother wash and iron clothes to earn money.

Chavez took up boxing to earn money to bring his family out of poverty. He began as an amateur boxer at the age of 16, shortly before moving to Culiacan to pursue his dream to become a professional boxer.

2. His mother nicknamed him 鈥淐acho鈥

Many refer to him as the “Cesar of boxing” or the “Great Mexican champion,” but his mother Isabel Gonzalez gave him the moniker “Cachito” or “Cacho,” which became synonymous with him.

3. Ch谩vez made his professional debut at age 17

He performed for the first time as a professional boxer at the age of 17. He faced Miguel Ruiz in Culiacan, Sinaloa during his twelfth fight on March 4, 1981. At the end of the first round, his delivery of blow knocked Ruiz out.

The blow was delivered as the bell sounded; as a result, Chavez was disqualified and Ruiz won the bout. But on the next day, when his manager Ramon Felix and the Mexican boxing commission changed the result, he was proclaimed the winner.

4. He earned 12 dollars in his first fight

Julio C茅sar Chavez revealed that in his first fight he earned 250 pesos (12 dollars). Later in his career, he went on to earn a whopping 10 million dollars. 

5. He won his first championship in September 1984

Ch谩vez won his first championship, the vacant WBC Super Featherweight  title, on September 13, 1984, by knocking out fellow Mexican Mario “Azabache ” Martinez at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. Martinez had been the betting favourite in the bout, due partly to his previous victory over former WBC world champion Rolando Navarrete in a non-title bout.

On April 19, 1985, Ch谩vez defended his title against number one ranked contender Ruben Castillo (63-4-2) by knocking him out in the sixth round. On July 7, 1985, Chavez defeated former and future champion Roger Mayweather via a second-round knockout.

On August 3, 1986, Chavez won a twelve-round majority decision over former WBA and future IBF Super Featherweight champion Rocky Lockridge in Monte Carlo. In his next bout, he defeated former champion Juan Laporte by a twelve-round unanimous decision.

On March 18, 1987, he defeated number one ranked challenger Francisco Tomas da Cruz (27-1-0) by third-round knockout. He successfully defended his WBC Super Featherweight title a total of nine times.

6. He held the longest winning streak of any boxer 

This boxer also holds the record for the longest undefeated streak in boxing history, 13 years! Chavez in 90 fights had 89 wins and only one draw until American Frankie Randall came along in 1994 and beat him by split decision.

7. Ch谩vez was inducted into the 鈥淚nternational Boxing Hall of Fame鈥

His achievement since he began his boxing career led to Julio achieving numerous awards due to his consistency and industrious routine. He was awarded Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1987.

He was also inducted into the ‘International Boxing Hall of Fame for the Class of 2011.

8. Ch谩vez retired as a professional boxer in his 25th year

As an in-fighter, Julio C茅sar Ch谩vez was renowned, especially for his devastating left hook and his extremely strong chin. He retired in his 25th year as a professional boxer with a record of 107 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws, with 86 knockouts and is considered one of the greatest fighters of all time.

He holds records for most successful consecutive defences of world titles (27), most title fights (37), most title-fight victories (31) and he is after  (with 23) for most title defences won by knockout (21). His record was 89-0-1 going into his first loss to Frankie Randall and had an 87-fight win streak until his draw with Whitaker.

9. He struggled with drug addiction

Later on, in his professional life, Chavez started abusing alcohol and drugs. Cocaine addiction set in for him. He was sent to rehab several times until he was fully recovered. 

In an interview, he stated that he started drinking the night after his fight with Edwin Rosario Chavez and is no longer addicted and continues to stay sober. He exercises to keep in shape and maintains good health.

10. Ch谩vez came out of retirement to avenge a prior defeat

After a couple of losses, Chavez obtained a victory over Terry Thomas in 2001 and decided to announce his retirement on a winning note.

However, in 2003, Chavez came out of retirement to avenge his defeat against Willy Wise a few years earlier. This time Chavez won the bout by knocking Wise out in the second round.
