To fully experience this, you need comfortable shoes and water to stay hydrated.

1. Avenida Francisco Sosa

To get a feel of the colonial era in Mexico City, head over to Avenida Francisco Sosa. Explore this street for endless charm from the beginning to the end.

The street is lined with colourful houses, quaint cafés, cosy restaurants and several cultural centres.

Walking down this street you will be getting the bohemian vibes of Coyoacan neighbourhood.

This street was originally part of the pre-Hispanic road network of the city. After the Spanish gained control of the area, they included in the new urban trace.

Avenida Francisco Sosa is, therefore, more than 500 years old. As you walk on this street, you will find one of the remaining colonial bridges next to the music library.

Take some time and admire the beautiful garden, Plaza Santa Catarina and sample some delicious churros at Churrería General de la República.

The street has a canopy of bougainvillaea and lavender wisteria, where birds happily chirping. Spot geckos slithering up the wall.

2. Higuera

The next street to see while in Mexico City is Higuera.

It is a small and picturesque street that connects the heart of Coyoacán to the beautiful Plaza de la Conchita.

The famous Mercado de Antojitos has saloons, coffee shops and restaurants. Walk into one and enjoy some delicious Mexican cuisine.

This street has picturesque indoor plazas with several activities to do one of them being visiting the San Luis Obispo farmer’s market.

The are several chain stores on this street such as The Gap, Pottery Barn, Victoria’s Secret, The Apple Store, Sephora, Urban Outfitters, Ross, Express. Barnes and Noble, Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Banana Republic.

3. Paseo de la Reforma

To see one of the most symbolic streets of Mexico City, check out Paseo de la Reforma. It dates back to the 1860s and was designed after the great European boulevards.

To get to this street, use Avenida Insurgentes that will lead to the Estela de Luz. You will find restaurants, hotels, shops, bookshops and boutiques.

It is here that you will also find one of the most important icons of the city; the Angel of Independence.

The street gets closed on weekends from morning to midnight.

On Sunday’s, there are bike rides happening on the streets and pedestrians walking on car-free streets. Pets can also be spotted walking with their owners.

This street is now home to several of Mexico’s tallest buildings such as the Torre Mayor, others can be found in the Zona Rosa.

There are more modern extensions on the avenue close to the old Paseo.

4. Avenida Presidente Masaryk

Avenida Presidente Masaryk is a street in the affluent Polanco neighbourhood of Mexico City.

It starts from Calzada General Mariano Escobedo to the east and Avenida Ferrocarril de Cuernavaca to the west.

On the northern end of the street is Chapultepec Park. This street also offers the best bar-hopping experience. There are several trendy bars on this street.

You can also find small underground clubs close to the main avenue. These clubs are exclusive and the drinks are pricey.

If you are looking for luxury labels, then Avenida Presidente Masaryk is the perfect place to visit.

The street is filled with boutiques and is home to the best luxury brands in the world.

Store like Louis Vuitton, Bvlgari, Cartier, Gucci, Hermes and Tiffany & Co can be found here. There are cheaper options too.

Take a stroll through the beautiful parks and temples while interacting with the friendly locals.

5. Alvaro Obregón

The other street to see while in Mexico City is Alvaro Obregón found in La Roma. It has several shops, cafes, perfect for people watching, nightlife.

This avenue is one of the largest and well landscaped. It crosses La Roma neighbourhood into two; Roma Norte and Roma Sur.

Along this street, you will find hotels, bookstores, art galleries, cafes and trendy restaurants on either side.

Most of the restaurants here are new, this is because the street is now at the centre of alternative culture of the city.

Casa Lamm Cultural Centre is an old mansion that now houses excellent exhibits and a great restaurant. You cannot afford to miss this establishment while here.
