1 Eduardo Mondlane

Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane was born on June 20th, 1920 in Mozambique at a place called Manjacaze. He is famously known for being the President of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO) since 1962 which was the year that FRELIMO was founded in Tanzania, until 1969. He was an anthropologist by profession and worked as a history and sociology professor at Syracuse University. Apart from his political and professor career, he was also a father to four kids and a husband to Janet Mondlane.

In 1969 Mondlane was assassinated and theories propose that his rivals inside FRELIMO, Tanzanian politicians, international actors and the Portuguese secret service killed him by planting a bomb in a book and sending it to the FRELIMO headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Mondlane died when he opened the book and the bomb exploded when he was in the house of an American friend, Betty King.

2 Graca Machel

Graca Machel was born on October 17th, 1945 in Mozambique in a place called Gaza Province. She is a Mozambican politician and humanitarian who is famously known to be the only woman in modern history to serve as the First Lady of two countries, South Africa and Mozambique. Graca was is an international advocate for women’s and children’s rights and was made an Honorary Dame of England by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for her humanitarian work. She is a member of the African Progressive Group (APP) which advocates for equitable and sustainable development in Africa at the highest level.

As a panellist, she promotes coalition building to harness and meditate knowledge and convene policymakers to influence policies for lasting change in Africa. Apart from humanitarian and political activities, Graca was the widow of South African President Nelson Mandela and Mozambique President Samora Machel.

3 Samora Machel

Samora Machel was born on September 29th, 1933 in Mozambique in a place called Gaza Province. His famously known for being the first President of Mozambique since 1975 when the country gained independence. He was also the President of the Mozambique Liberation Front from 1970 to 1986, a Mozambican military commander, and a revolutionary socialist leader. During his early life, Machel studied nursing in the capital city of Lourenco which today it’s called Maputo. Machel, later on, died in office in 1986 when his presidential aircraft crashed near the Mozambican-South African border.

4 Teresa Heinz

Teresa Heinz was born on October 5, 1938, in the city of Lourenco Marques in the east African colony of Portuguese Mozambique. In 1960 Teresa earned a Bachelor of Arts in Romance languages and literature from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. She then graduated from the school of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Geneva in 1963. She moved to the United States to be an interpreter at the United Nations.

Teresa is better known for being a businesswoman and a philanthropist. She is the chair of the Heinz Endowments and the Heinz Family Philanthropies. Apart from her business and philanthropy career, Heinz is the widow of former U.S Senator John Heinz and the wife of former U.S Secretary of State John Kerry who was also a longtime U.S senator, and 2004 Democratic Presidential nominee John Kerry. She is also a mother to 3kids including Andre and Christopher.

5 Tasha de Vasconcelos

Tasha Sandra Mota e Cunha de Vasconcelos is a Mozambican-born Anglo- Portuguese, supermodel, actress and humanitarian ambassador born on August 15, 1966, in Mozambique at a place called Beira. During her childhood her family was forced to flee from two revolutions; first, in that country, and then second from Rhodesia to Canada where Tasha studied International Relations at the University of British Columbia. Tasha is also the ambassador for the Institut Pasteur. She has been appointed as a UN Women Global Champion for planet 50-50 by 2030.

6 Eusebio

Eusebio was better known as the Portuguese footballer who played as a striker. He was born on January 25, 1942, and throughout that time he was considered one of the greatest players of all time. During his professional career, Eusebio scored 733 goals in 745 matches. He had speed, techniques, athleticism and ferocious right-footed shot, making him a prolific footballer. He remained Benfica’s greatest player with 473 goals in 440 competitive matches and helped Portugal reach third place at the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Eusebio was the first-ever player to win the European Golden Boot, in 1968.

When he retired from his football career, he became an ambassador of football and was one of the most recognizable faces of his generation. His name kept on appearing in the best player of all time lists and polls of the IFFHS and World Soccer magazine. He, later on, died on January 5, 2014, of heart failure.

7 AI Bowlly

AI Bowlly was a Mozambican- born South African-British vocalist and jazz guitarist who was popular during the 1930s in Britain. He was born in 1898 in Maputo formerly known as Lourenco Marques, in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique. Bowlly was brought up in Johannesburg by his parents who met en route to Australia and moved to South Africa. He recorded more than 1000 songs and his most popular songs include 鈥淐lose Your Eyes鈥, 鈥淟ove Is the Sweetest Thing鈥, 鈥淢idnight, the Stars and You鈥, 鈥淕oodnight, Sweetheart鈥 and many more.鈥 In 1941 Bowlly was killed by a Luftwaffe Parachute mine that detonated outside his flat at ten past three in the morning. 

8 Abel Xavier

Abel was born on November 30, 1972, in Mozambique which was then a Portuguese colony. He is famously known for being a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a right-back. From his debut in 1993, Xavier played 20 games for the Portugal national team and was selected in their EUFA Euro 2000 and 2002 FIFA World Cup. Later he became a manager for several Portuguese clubs and the Mozambique national team.

As a child, he moved to Portugal from Mozambique and later on settled in Jamor in the Western Suburbs of Lisbon, where he lived in poverty. He grew up in strict Catholic background. Abel played for clubs In Portugal, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, England, Turkey and Germany before retiring with the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer in 2008. When he retired from his playing career, Xavier converted to Islam and changed his first name to Faisal.  

9 Carlos Queiroz

Born on March 1, 1953, in Mozambique in a place called Nampula, Carlos has been known for being a Portuguese football coach and currently, he is the head coach of the Iran national team. He has served as the manager of his native Portugal鈥檚 national team, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran, Colombia and Egypt. Carlos has also been Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager at English Club Manchester United. He has won several awards as a coach at junior levels and he is known for being the longest-serving manager in the history of the Iran national team, serving almost eight years. He also led the national team to two consecutive world cups.

10 Mariza

She is a Portuguese fado singer who was born on December 16, 1973, in Lourenco Marques, Portuguese Mozambique, to a Portuguese father and a Mozambican mother. She was raised in Lisbon’s historic quarters of Mouraria and Alfama when her family moved to Metropolitan Portugal. She began her singing career when she was very young and she sang in a wide variety of musical styles, including gospel, soul and jazz. Her father encouraged her to adopt fado because she believed her participation in traditional music would grant her greater acceptance in the Portuguese community. Mariza has sold over 1 million records worldwide.
