The Parkpop festival is a free music festival held annually on the last Sunday of June in the city of The Hague, Netherlands. It was first held in 1981 and was attended by 35,000 visitors. Today up to 350,000 people visit the festival every year. Parkpop held the title for the largest free pop festival in Europe for a long time.

The music festival brings in the biggest acts across an array of genres, showcasing the best of pop, indie pop, hip-hop and contemporary country. The festival is held at Malieveld, a large grass field opposite The Hague Central Station, in the city center of The Hague, Netherlands. Let’s look at the Top 10 Cool Facts about Parkpop.

The festival has a great history of performance line ups, including many national and international icons from different genres, like Juliette Lewis, Nick Lowe, Robbie Williams, Beth Hart and The Bangles and many more. The festival also presents a platform to upcoming artists to showcase their talents. 

2. Parkpop festival was born out of integrating two festivals 

The festival began in 1981 with an attendance of 35,000 visitors. It emerged out of two festivals known as Maliepop and Noordzeepop, which were unsuccessful due to bad weather. After the municipality suggested the integration of the two festivals, Parkpop was born! Now, up to 350,000 people visit this festival every year, in addition to a line-up of national and international artists.

Since its inception, the festival held the title of the largest free pop music festival in Europe for a long time, attracting a large and varied audience. Thousands of music lovers gather at the festival for the party, which features many upcoming talents and famous musicians. Parkpop has become a household name in The Hague with its rich history and global popularity. 

4. It has a festival market

The festival has a market of its own, that is held every year on its premises. You can get merchandise and accessories such as sunglasses, CDs, jackets, trousers, posters, and food here. You can also register, if you鈥檙e interested in selling and want to rent a Pop Market stall at the festival. Quite a way to make a complete day without any hitches! 

5. There is a smaller version of Parkpop Festival

In 2017, the festival created a mini version of itself called Parkpop Downtown. It takes place prior to Parkpop in The Hague鈥檚 PAARD, where one can enjoy many acts from various artists for free. Its aim is to highlight a theme that urgently needs to be brought to attention, such as gender inequality in music.

With people of all ages coming to the festival, the atmosphere is very welcoming and family friendly. The musical gala gladly receives children and people of all ages. The festival organizers are very particular about the festival鈥檚 line-up appealing to such an all-encompassing crowd. 

7. The festival is moving from Zuiderpark to Malieveld in The Hague

For the first 39 years, the prime location of the festival was Zuiderpark, which was what gave the festival its name. But from 2022 onwards, the festival鈥檚 location will be at the Malieveld in The Hague. The move came after the festival organizers鈥 belief that Malieveld is more accessible and will attract more people to the festival.

Along with being a major venue for concerts, parties and markets, Malieveld is also frequently in the news as a place for major demonstrations and protests. The director of the festival Guus Dutrieux said, 鈥淎 historic location like the Malieveld gives us the opportunity to create Parkpop even more grandly and thus appeal to an even more rural audience without losing the Hague feeling. With the move, we can also show in the coming years that The Hague is the pop city of the Netherlands with Parkpop as the annual highlight鈥.

Parkpop is one of the largest and longest-running festivals in Europe with NO ENTRANCE FEE. Parkpop takes place in the summer annually and each year we present a line up full of national and international acts. Visitors from all ages not only come for the music, but also enjoy all kinds of other fun activities, the beautiful surroundings and each other!

9. Major names that have graced Parkpop Festival

UB40 – It’s been 44 years since UB40 was founded by a bunch of friends who filled their unemployed days with their huge love for reggae. Over the years, UB40 achieved many successes and songs such as ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Food For Thought’, ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘I Got You Babe’ are now part of our collective memory. 

The Hague’s very own DI-RECT has become an integral part of the Dutch musical landscape. The five-member pop-rock bank has been touring internationally for more than 20 years and has achieved one success after another. With 9 albums and countless Top 40 hits such as ‘Soldier On’, ‘Where We Belong’ and ‘Devil Don’t Care’, DI-RECT has everything in store to make the Malieveld jump with happiness.

She seemingly came out of nowhere: Froukje, with a hard message that turned the whole of the Netherlands upside down. Describing her perspective on the current climate crisis, the protest song “Groter Dan Ik” went viral in 2020 and put Froukje on the radar. Froukje is now unstoppable: her EP Licht En Donker has millions of streams, she won the 3FM Talent Award and is touring all over the Netherlands.

10. Parkpop is extremely popular

Parkpop is the largest free one-day pop music festival in Europe. This fest in the Hague has become so popular that it now boasts a Saturday night lineup and a mini downtown fest on Friday.
