Vaalseberg is a hill with a height of 322.4 meter. It has (1058ft) above the NAP and is the highest point in the European part of the Netherlands. The hill has been known as the “Dutch mountains”.

Vaalseberg has been located in the province of Limburg at the south-easternmost edge of the country. It is near the town of Vaals which it was named after.

The mount scenery on the island of Saba which is in Caribbean parts of the Netherlands has been replaced vaalserberg  as the highest point in the Netherlands. This was after following the dissolution of  the Netherlands Antilles in 2010.

1.Vaalserberg has the highest mountain but not very tall

 Netherlands has been known as a  flat place. It鈥檚 so flat, its name even means 鈥渓ow lands.鈥 Given the country鈥檚 low elevation, its people have taken to marking their country鈥檚 tallest things.

The Vaalserberg is about 1,058 feet (322 meters) tall, so really it鈥檚 more of a hill than a mountain. It became a tourist attraction after a monument was erected atop it, honoring its noteworthy height. The mountain is also home to the three-country point, which marks where the borders of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany meet.

2. It is a Three- country point(Tripoint)

The Vaalserberg  which is also the location of the tripoint. This where Belgium, Germany and Netherlands meet. Also called the Drielandenput( three country point) in Dutch, Dreil盲ndereck (“three country corner”) in German and Trois Fronti猫res (“three borders”) in French. You can visit 3 countries in 3 second .There is a border stones and the borders  are marked like a pie slices.

3. The Vaalserberg was once quadripoint 

Between 1830 and 1919, the summit was a quadripoint. The fourth country in the puzzle was the no man land Moresnet. It was a neutral territory which was governed by the Netherlands and Prussia. Currently the Neutral Moresnet is part of Belgium.

4.There is a largest outdoor maze at Drielandenpunt

 The maze at the Drielandenpunt  which was designed by the British landscape architect Adrian Fisher. It is the largest outdoor maze in Europe. The maze is the highest one in the Netherlands which is understandable.

In the maze there are 3 observation platform. That are fun to solve the maze. Visitors are warned to be prepared for some water splashes and other surprises. To solve this maze will take you between 45 minute and a hour.

5.The 50 m Baudouin Tower stands on the Belgian side of the Three-Border Region

The  Baudouin tower which  is a 50 meter high tower in the German-Dutch-Belgian triangle on the Vaalserberg. Its the highest point of the Netherlands .

You can reach the tower via stairs, or with an elevator that has transparent walls. On the tower there is a platform with a restaurant, and for those who are not yet tall enough, there is a staircase that leads to the roof of the restaurant.

From the tower you have a view as far as Oachen , the Dutch province of Limburg , and the Belgian provinces of Li猫ge and Limburg .

6. The Wilhelmina Tower which is 34 m High

This tower stands on the highest point of the Netherlands, the Vaalserberg. On the observation deck one can reach a height of 353 meters above sea level.

7. The Gemmenicher Tunnel  that   crosses the 322 m high Vaalserberg with the border triangle Germany-Belgium-Netherlands

The Gemmenicher Tunnel which  is a 870 m long, double-track railway tunnel near Aachen. Its  connects DB route 2552 with SNCB route Spoorlijn 24 in Belgium on the Montzenroute .

The tunnel was built in 1872 by the Bergisch-M盲rkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft as part of the Aachen鈥揃leyberg鈥揥elkenraedt railway. The structure is named after the village of Gemmenich , today part of Plombi猫res . 

In Belgium, the tunnel is also known as the “Botzelaer Tunnel” (Tunnel de Botselaer) . It is a border tunnel between Germany and Belgium and is 250 m long on Belgian territory. The state border running in the tunnel only shifted slightly as a result of the German cession of territory after the First World War . 

With a maximum overburden of 66 m, the tunnel crosses the 322 m high Vaalserberg with the border triangle Germany-Belgium-Netherlands. For operational reasons, the tunnel has been administered by the German side since its construction, first by the Bergisch-M盲rkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, then by Deutsche Reichsbahn , the Deutsche Bundesbahn and since 1994 by Deutsche Bahn AG and its subsidiary DB Netz AG .

 

8. The Vaalserberg has been a famous cycling target

One quarter of the country is below sea level and the highest point of the country is the Vaalserberg, at 322 meters above sea level. 

 Vaalserberg is often used in the Amstel Gold Race and is climbed halfway through the race. The climb is named in the roadbook of the Gold Race as Drielandenpunt and is followed by the Gemmenich climb.

The Amstel Gold Race is an annual one-day classic road cycling race held in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. It traditionally marks the turning point of the spring classics, with the climbers and stage racers replacing the cobbled classics riders as the favourites.

9. The First tower in Vaalserberg was built in 1905

The first tower at the site was built in 1905 during the reign of its namesake, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, and was demolished in 1945. While the  second 20 metres (66 ft) tower opened on 11 August 1951 and was demolished over the winter of 2010鈥2011 because of its poor condition and high maintenance requirements.

10. The Historic center  filled with fine old buildings

 The tripoint and Vaalserberg win most of the attention in Vaals. But you鈥檒l be missing out if you don鈥檛 take time to poke around the old centre, which is replete with fine old buildings.

 There are more than 70 Dutch heritage sites packed onto just a few streets. On the Von Clermontplein/Julianaplein, site of the town hall. Its a glorious ensemble of stately 18th and 19th-century houses, with mansard roofs and whitewashed walls.
