Sam Hammington is a New Zealander Australian comedian primarily active in South Korea. He grew up as a son of a casting director and started working in the Australian Television industry from an early age.

He appeared in one of the South Korean reality military shows, Real Me and he became the most recognizable foreign face in South Korea. He was fluent in Korean have studied it at the university.

1. He Was Born in 1977

Sam Hammington was born Samuel Mayer Russ Hammington on July 31, 1977, in Wellington, New Zealand, to Bruce William and Jan Russ. Sam is of English descent, tracing his ancestry back to Berkshire, England.

Sam spent much of his early life in Melbourne, Australia, with his mother, Jan Russ, who is a casting director and an actor primarily known for working in a long-running soap opera Neighbours.

He has an elder sister from his mother鈥檚 previous relationship. His mother was forced to give her up for adoption during the 1960s because she was young and unwed.

2. Hammington is a University Graduate

When he was young, Hammington began working on television in Australia. He later shifted his focus to his studies in secondary school.

He attended the Swinburne University of Technology, where he decided to take up an Asian language course to strengthen his resume. Hammington selected Korean because Japanese and Chinese language courses were in high demand.

In 2002, he graduated with double majors in marketing and Korean studies and subsequently became a transfer student at Korean University.

3. Hammington Comedy Career as an Adult Started in 2002

He had started his television career in Australia when he was still a child. However, his career as an adult while at the prestigious South Korean University.

Hammington attended a comedy show that had in attendance entertainment celebrities such as directors and writers. The showrunners at some point needed participants for a comedy skit and Sam Hammington was selected.

His performance in the short skit impressed a particular entertainment scout who came to the show with the intention of recruiting a non-Korean native who was fluent in Korean for an upcoming show. This marked the beginning of a promising comedy career in South Korea.

4. Hammington Became a National Star in 2013

Hammington was selected as an original cast member on the first season of the reality-military show Real Me in 2013. This was when he became a national star.

The show had eight male celebrities who experienced life in the military. This military life is mandatory for all mentally sound and able-bodied Korean men for two years.

The show debuted on Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on April 14, 2013, as part of the Sunday Night programming block.

In 2013 and 2014, during the MBC Entertainment Awards, he won the Best male Newcomer/Rookie Award in Show/ Variety and Friendship awards nominated for his work at Real Me.

5. Sam Hammington Was Cast in Reality-Variety Show 鈥淭he Return of Superman鈥

Hammington was a cast member of the popular Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) reality-variety show The Return of Superman. He co-starred the show with his two sons, William and Bentley Hammington.

On November 19, 2019, entertainment industry sources reported that Hammington and his son had completed recording for The Return of Superwoman. The family had been on the show since 2016.

The show saw Hammington win several awards, such as The Top Excellence in Variety Award at the 2018 KBS Entertainment Awards.

6. Hammington Got Married in 2003

He first met his future wife Jung Yu-mi in 1999 at a restaurant in Itaewon. They became close and dated for years before they got married in October 2003.

The couple had two wedding ceremonies, a traditional Korean one aired nationally on Korean television and another in Sam Hammington’s home country at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia.

They have two sons, William Bruce Hammington, born in July 2016, and Bentley Hammington, born in November 2017. His first son was named after his father, who passed away in the early 2000s.

7. Hammington Has Amassed Many Awards Throughout His Career

His comedy career has been a success, amassing many awards he can boast about. In 2013 he won the Best Male Newcomer/ Rookie Award in Show/ Variety under MBC Entertainment Awards.

During the MBC Entertainment Awards in 2014, he won the Friendship Award for the variety show The Return of Superman. 

He won the Top Excellence Award-Male Variety Category during the 16th KBS Entertainment Awards in 2018. Also, during the 17th KBS Entertainment Awards in 2019, he won Grand Prize (Daesang) w/ other Superman fathers.

8. When He Was Young, He Still Appeared in TV Shows

While Hammington was growing up, he appeared in films like Holiday Island, The Flying Neighbor and All the Rivers Run. All these were released in the 1980s. Hammington is best known for being on Gag Concert, which allowed him to star in other Korean variety shows.

At the Korea-Japan World Cup in 2002, it was reported that he did some coverage for a Korean television station. He also co-hosted a Drivetime radio show with Annabelle Ambrose from 2008 to 2012.

9. Hammington Participated in Charity Work

At the end of November 2012, the W-Foundation (Wisdom for Future Foundation) of South Korea, a non-profit charitable organization, was tasked with spreading awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

As part of the W-Foundation ideas to raise awareness of such was the gathering of several Korean actors, sports figures, and singers in a chorus in a music video titled 鈥淏eautiful World.鈥 Hammington was one of the figures involved in the charity.

He was featured in W-Foundation鈥檚 CD Complication,  Hooxi the Beginning, and all proceeds from the sale went towards the Foundation鈥檚 International Climate Refugee Relief Fund.

10. He worked in Multiple Fields

Hammington has worked in multiple fields since being based in Korea. He has hosted a radio show, co-hosting Witch Hunt, and has won multiple awards for his performance on both programs, The Return of Superman and Real Men.
