Crowe was a New Zealand cricketer, Test, One Day International (ODI) captain, and commentator. He played for the New Zealand national cricket team and was regarded as one of the country鈥檚 greatest batsmen.

He was one of the main brains of starting the ICC World Test Championship. The concept was initially proposed in 2009 bud materialized in 2019.

Crowe was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to cricket in the 1992 New Year Honors. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on February 28, 2015.

1. Martin Crowe Was Born into a Sporting Family

Crowe was born on September 22, 1962, in Henderson, a suburb of Auckland, to a family of cricketers. His father, Dave Crowe, played first-class cricket for Canterbury and Wellington.

Crowe’s elder brother, Jeff Crowe, played Test cricket. One of the brothers’ first cousins is actor Russell Crowe.

He joined his father and brother at the Cornwall Cricket Club in 1968, with which he maintained a lifelong connection. He was also the great-grandson of All Black Francis Jervis.

2. Crowe Education

From 1976 to 1980, he attended Auckland Grammar School. In his final year, he was the head boy. Crowe captained the school鈥檚 cricket team and played rugby union as a wing.

3. Crowe Played for Several Domestic Cricket Teams in His Career

In January 1980, Crowe made his first-class debut playing for Auckland against Canterbury. He scored 51 runs in his first innings, which was his team鈥檚 highest score.

In 1981 he was named New Zealand鈥檚 Young Cricketer of the year. He returned to New Zealand for the 1981-1982 domestic season.

After the 1982-1983 season, Crowe switched to Central District. His international duties limited his career at Central District.

Before the 1990-1991 season, Crowe transferred to Wellington. He made only nine first-class appearances, the last of which came during the 1994-1995 season.

Crowe signed to play English county cricket with Somerset in 1984. His first County Championship season.

4. Crowe Played for Somerset

Crowe signed to play English country cricket with Somerset in 1984. He performed well in his first County Championship season, finishing second in Somerset鈥檚 averages and placing sixth for overall runs scored.

He returned during the 1987 County Championship season and was placed third in the overall averages and third for overall runs scored.

Against Hampshire in the 1987 Benson & Hedges Cup, he scored 155, the highest one-day scorer of his career.

In 1988, he returned for the final season at Somerset but only played a few matches. From the 48 matches he participated in, he finished with a first-class batting average of 59.46.

5. Crowe Had a Great 1992 World Cup

At the 1992 World Cup, which New Zealand co-hosted with Australia, Crowe finished as the tournament鈥檚 leading run-scorer with 456 runs at an average of 114. He was named player of the tournament.

6. Crowe Represented New Zealand National Cricket Team

Crowe made his first international debut for New Zealand in February 1982 in a One Day International (ODI) game against Australia at Auckland鈥檚 Eden Park. He played for the national cricket team in all World Cups.

I992 World Cup was one of his best, and he was named player of the tournament. Crowe as a game for New Zealand was in 1995 before he retired.

7. Crowe Was a Captain

He was first appointed captain of New Zealand for a tour of Pakistan in October and November 1990. Crowe’s second time as captain came in early 1991 when Sri Lanka toured New Zealand.

In the first Test of the series played with Sri Lanka in Wellington, Crowe scored 299 runs in his team鈥檚 second innings, setting a new record for the highest score by a New Zealander. He and Andrew Joned put on 467 runs setting a record for the new highest partnership in Test cricket.

He also captained New Zealand during the 1992 World Cup. Crowe’s last series of captaincy came when Australia in February and March 1993. However, he had struggled with injuries and was replaced to give him time to concentrate on his form.

Crowe returned as captain for the final match in November 1993, the series’ first game against Australia. In total, he captained New Zealand in sixteen Tests winning only two and had a better record in ODIs, with the team winning 21 out of 44 matches under his captaincy.

8. After His Retirement, he Started Coaching

After Crowe retired, he helped develop a local variation of cricket, 鈥淐ricket Max,鈥 and became a television commentator and pundit.

Crowe was a South Sydney Rabbitohs Rugby League Football Club board member. He also roped in as the CEO of the management team of Royal Challengers Bangalore and later parted ways with the tea bringing in a new coach.

He mentored current New Zealand batsmen Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill. In 2014, Crowe named Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson on the young Fab Four list for test cricket.

9. Crowe Got Married Three Times

Crowe married Simone Curtice in 1991, an interior designer and separated five years later in 1996. Later he started a relationship with Suzanne Taylor, with whom he had one daughter.

In 2005, Taylor and Crowe separated; in 2009, he married Lorraine Downes, a former Miss Universe, for the third time. The couple remained married until his death.

10. Crowe Died from Lymphoma Complication

It was revealed that Crowe had been diagnosed with lymphoma on October 15, 2012. He blamed the illness on a failing immune system, weakened by various illnesses picked up while touring India in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2014, he announced that the lymphoma had returned and indicated his chances of survival were beyond 12 months. His wish was to see the 2015 Cricket World Cup in February and March 2015.

Crowe attended the 2015 Cricket World Cup Final between Australia and New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, his last public appearance.

On March 3, 2016, he died of a complication of lymphoma in Auckland. Crowe’s funeral was held in Holy Trinity Cathedral in a Christian ceremony in Parnell, Auckland.
