Daniel Luca Vettori is a former cricketer and coach of New Zealand cricket. He played for the New Zealand national cricket team and was the 200th player to win their Test cricket cap for New Zealand.

He was the youngest male to have represented New Zealand in Test Cricket and captained New Zealand between 2007 to 2011. Vettori was the eighth player in Test cricket history to clutch 300 wickets and score 3,000 runs.

Vettori, a slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler, was known for his flight, guile rather than prodigious turn, and accuracy. He announced his retirement from cricket following the 2015 Cricket World Cup and has since coached in various roles.

1. Daniel Vettori is of Italian Descent

Daniel Luca Vettori was born on January 27, 1979, in Auckland, New Zealand. His father is Italian, and his mother is Kiwi.

He was born into a sports family; Vettori’s first cousin David Hill is a rugby union player. His cousin played a Test for the famous All Blacks, and his uncle Tony Hill and cousin Joseph Hill both played First-Class cricket.

Vettori grew up in Hamilton, attending Marian School and later St. Paul鈥檚 Collegiate School, where he received his formal education.

2. Vettori Was the Youngest to Play for New Zealand

Initially, Vettori was a medium-pace bowler but slowly transitioned to bowl-off spin deliveries. He made his senior debut in 1996/1997 for Northern District.

Vettori made his first international debut during England鈥檚 1997 New Zealand tour at 18. At the time, he was the youngest to play Test cricket and One Day International (ODI).

He then took his first international five-wicket against Sri Lanka in March 1997. Vettori was among the very small minority of international sports stars to wear prescription spectacles while playing sports and one to play test cricket with spectacles.

3. Vettori is a Coach

From 2014 to 2018, Vettori was the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. He was chosen as the head coach of the Dublin Chiefs in the first season of the Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament, but the tournament was later canceled.

In July 2019, he also became the spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh national side. He was appointed the Caribbean Premier League franchise Barbados Royals head coach.

4. Vettori Captaincy Was Outstanding

He had captained New Zealand in ODI cricket on occasion. Vettori captained New Zealand at the inaugural Twenty20 World Championships in South Africa and was appointed the team鈥檚 captain in all formats.

His captaincy began with a losing Test series in England and attracted some criticism during the ODI series that followed. Vettori had shouted from the balcony following a controversial runout and later refused to shake hands with the England team after the match.

 The controversial approach of Vettori contrasted with Fleming鈥檚 more passive, laid-back style. Vettori stepped down from the captaincy and retired from One day International cricket after the 2011 World Cup.

Vettori was called again into the ODI team for the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and the 2015 Cricket World Cup; by this time, he had retired from Test cricket. His final Test match was an emergency injury replacement against Pakistan in November.

In 2009, during New Zealand鈥檚 tour of Sri Lanka, Vettori took his 300th Test wicket. He became the second New Zealander to do so, joining Richard Hadlee.

Starting August 2022, his 362 Test wickets lie second only to Hadlee. Vettori is New Zealand鈥檚 leading One Day International wicket-taker with 297 dismissals for the national side.

He was the first left-arm spin bowler to take more than 300 wickets in both Test matches and One Day Internationals. At 21, he was the youngest man to take 100 Test wickets.

He took 20 five-wicket hauls in Test matches, including taking ten wickets in a match three times. As of August 2022, he remains the third-best ever New Zealander in bowling, with only Ajaz Patel and Richard Hadlee taking better figures in a match.

6. Vettori Was a Lower-Order Batsman

Vettori evolved into a useful lower-order batsman, scoring more than 4,500 Test runs, including six centuries. However, it took 47 Tests to score his first 1,000 runs at an average of 17.24, and the second thousand took just 22 Tests at an average of 42.52 per innings.

Vettori’s highest Test score of 140 came against Sri Lanka at Singhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground Colombo in August 2019.

7. Vettori is an All-Rounder

An All-Rounder is a cricketer who often performs well at bowling and batting. Vettori is good at both; he could bat right, left-handed and bowl with both hands.

Vettori scored 2227 runs in Test Cricket, batting at the No.8 position. This was the most runs scored by any batsman in that slot. He averaged 39.76 with 4 centuries and 13 half centuries in that position, including his career highest score of 140.

Vettori’s 362 wickets from 113 matches are the most by a left-arm spinner in Test history, way ahead of England鈥檚 Derek Underwood’s 297 from 86 matches.

8. He Participated in Five World Cup Edition for the New Zealand Cricket Team

From 1999 to 2015, Vettori was featured in the New Zealand cricket team in five World Cup editions. Vettori has taken 36 wickets at an economy rate of 4.14.

Vettori was instrumental in the ICC World Cup 2015 edition. His bowling skills helped New Zealand enter the finals. He picked up 15 wickets from nine games at an average of 20.5 and an economy rate of four.

He was named in the Team of ICC World Cup 2015. Vettori also represented New Zealand in 4 T20 World Cups from 2007 to 2012. After the 2015 Cricket World Cup, he announced retirement from all forms of cricket.

9. Daniel Vettori Married in 2007

Vettori married Mary O鈥機arroll in 2007, and the couple has three children. After his marriage, he moved from Hamilton to Auckland but continued to play for Northern Districts throughout his career.

10. Vettori Was Nicknamed 鈥淗arry Potter鈥

Vettori is nicknamed the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥 because of his spectacular look and floppy hair. In an interview with HZ Herald, he confirmed why he prefers spectacles over contact lenses. He said, 鈥淚’ve worn glasses since I was about three years old. I鈥檓 accustomed to them and they don鈥檛 bother me.鈥
