With Barcelona being a major tourist destination, everyone is usually looking to have a good time while visiting the Catalan capital.

But to truly enjoy, one needs to fully let go and immerse in everything it has to offer, and that was not the case for Barcelona when, on February 1, 2024, Catalonia declared a drought emergency, with Barcelona being heavily affected.

The water reservoirs were going below 16%, and it was all about rationing, but with the recent rains, there seems to be a different tune in Catalonia.

The dry nightmare days seem to be over, as the rains have replenished water reservoirs like the reservoirs in the Ter-Llobregat area, which are now at 24.8% of their capacity.

This water system serves Barcelona and its metropolitan area, and the drought emergency in place affected Barcelona.

With the drought emergency phase being lifted, the water limit per person per day will rise from 200 to 230 litres. Public swimming pools won’t need to declare themselves climate shelters when opening, as it was supposed to happen if the emergency phase was still on.

Filling or refilling pools will be allowed for public use and will also be permitted for private use with a water recirculation system.

Talking to journalists, David Mascort, the Climate Action Minister, said, “We are now at 25.4% of reservoir capacity, and there is still more water arriving from recent rains.

We can now say that we will not enter an emergency drought level until late 2024 or early 2025. If it rains in the fall, we will be able to extend it further in time.”

To minimize future effects of drought, the Catalan government will be looking to install a floating desalination plant off the shore of the port of Barcelona and acquire 12 mobile desalination units for the Costa Brava’s northern region.

However, this won’t come into operation until the next drought emergency phase, which is not expected sooner than the end of the year.

With such a message from the authorities, it is such good news for everyone who was looking to visit Barcelona and was worried about not fully enjoying the city due to water restrictions.

Now, there is no reason to worry, as the Catalan capital is ready to embrace visitors with open arms, offering a rejuvenated and vibrant atmosphere for all to revel in its delights.
