Being in Barcelona, there is one place that every visitor and resident must experience – the iconic Rambla de Catalunya.

This major street in the Eixample district of central Barcelona is one of the city’s trendiest destinations, lined with lime trees and boasting numerous international fashion shops.

Stretching from Plaça de Catalunya to Avinguda Diagonal, this 1.3-kilometer pedestrian pulse is truly the heartbeat of Barcelona’s shopping and leisure scene.

However, according to Laia Bonet, Barcelona’s councilor for urbanism, this iconic avenue has not undergone a comprehensive renovation since 2009.

Although some minor works have been carried out since then, the time has come for a spectacular facelift to restore the splendor of Rambla de Catalunya.

Good news for residents and visitors alike – the renovation of Rambla de Catalunya’s two sidewalks is currently underway this month of May. 

Intending to renew 600,000 square meters of asphalt by 2028, the city has allocated a substantial budget of €28.9 million to breathe new life into this iconic public space.

The paving of intersections on May 19 and 20 is just the beginning of this ambitious project, aimed at steering clear of incidents and the deterioration of public spaces across the city.

While the renovation is expected to proceed smoothly with minimal disruptions, some traffic restrictions will be in place during selected weekends, including May 19-20 and 25-26. However, services and neighbors will still be able to access the area.

Known as the epicenter of Barcelona’s retail and leisure scene, Rambla de Catalunya is a postcard-perfect avenue, immediately recognizable thanks to its magnificent central walkway lined with linden blossom trees and crowned with sculptures at each end.

With this renovation, the city aims to enhance the appeal of this beloved destination, ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy their time in Barcelona.
