Barge East, an award-winning restaurant in East London, is situated on a 120-year-old Dutch Barge named De Hoop. The barge, which was sailed over from Den Helder in Holland has an incredible journey behind it. Childhood friends Tommo, Ryan, and Blandy teamed up to sail the barge across the North Sea to moor at Sweetwater in Hackney Wick, East London.

After six months of waiting for the perfect weather conditions, Tommo and Ryan started their voyage. Their journey was not without challenges as they sailed through unexpected stormy weather. Once back in the UK, De Hoop’s tall structure meant that it couldn’t fit under the River Lee’s low bridges. The barge had to be deconstructed, and the entire top deck was taken out so that it could just about squeeze underneath, with the help of large water bags below the deck to lower the boat.

Lovingly restored with upcycled materials, Barge East offers a truly iconic dining experience. The rustic decor and ambient tones create a unique atmosphere for diners inside the barge. The stunning riverside views can be enjoyed from one of the heated and covered outdoor tables. Their sensational, seasonal menus are prepared by their talented chefs who source the finest quality produce, and handpick homegrown ingredients from their Gardens for every dish.

Barge East has been awarded several accolades, including their first-ever double AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence in 2023 and 2024. They won the Taste of London 2022, were rated London’s #1 Restaurant on TripAdvisor in 2019 and 2020, and recommended by The Good Food Guide 2023 & Hardens 2023.

Their garden is one of the largest outdoor dining and drinking spaces in London, with a variety of events and activities regularly taking place.
