A lot is happening in Barcelona this week, but one event has the city buzzing with excitement – the Sant Jordi festival. Officially celebrated on April 23rd, 2024, the festivities run throughout the week, adding to the electric atmosphere.

As if that wasn’t enough, moviegoers are in for a cinematic treat as the Barcelona-Sant Jordi International Film Festival, or BCN Film Fest, is already underway.

Having kicked off from April 18th to 26th, with the iconic Cines Verdi as the main venue, the festival has unveiled the complete program for its eighth edition, and it promises to be a star-studded affair.

Blockbuster talents from across the globe are set to grace the red carpet, making this year’s BCN Film Fest a must-attend event for film enthusiasts.

For a week, cinema lovers can immerse themselves in a cinematic extravaganza, with the festival presenting 69 titles across its eight sections at various venues throughout Barcelona.

Until April 26th, moviegoers can revel in 15 world premieres, one European premiere, 20 Spanish premieres, and 11 Catalan premieres, showcasing the best of contemporary and independent filmmaking.

The BCN FILM FEST has attracted a stellar lineup of guests, including acclaimed actress Meg Ryan (“What Happens Next”), the crew of the opening film “Casa en flames” – Dani de la Orden, Emma Vilarasau, Clara Segura, María Rodríguez Soto, and José Pérez Ocaña – as well as celebrated talents like Paola Cortellesi (“Siempre nos quedará mañana”), Vincent Pérez (“Asunto de honor”), Belén Rueda, Irene Escolar, Laura Jou, and J. A. Bayona (“Caída Libre”), Jaime Lorente, Albert Baró, Eva Llorach, and Kike Maíllo (“Disco, Ibiza, Locomía”), Mikael Persbrandt (“Hammarskjöld. Fight for Peace”), and the “Mala persona” team of Fer García-Ruiz, Arturo Valls, Malena Alterio, Betsy Túrnez, and José Corbacho.

As a highlight of the festival, legendary director Richard Linklater will receive the BCN FILM FEST Award of Honour on April 26th during the closing ceremony, where he will present his highly anticipated new film “Hit Man.”

Hailed at the Venice Film Festival as one of the best works of his illustrious career, “Hit Man” is an unusual comedy that cements Linklater’s status as one of the most relevant and personal directors in contemporary world cinema.

The festival’s Award of Honour, which last year went to the esteemed Wim Wenders, recognizes Linklater’s outstanding career and the indelible mark his films have left on generations of film enthusiasts.

With venues such as Carrer DE Verdi, 32, Ateneu Barcelonès, Caixaforum, Casa Seat, Institut Français, La Perla 22 (Vila Del Llibre), Col·Legi Oficial D’arquitectes De Catalunya, and various civic centers hosting the weeklong event, Barcelona is poised to become a cinematic playground for movie lovers.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is a chance to immerse yourself in the city’s magnificent attractions and vibrant culture, while also indulging in the best of international and independent cinema at the BCN Film Fest.

As Barcelona celebrates the Sant Jordi festival, it’s the perfect time to revel in the city’s rich tapestry of art, culture, and entertainment.
