For centuries, the 85-meter tall tower has stood sentinel over Istanbul. Iniatialy it was a fire lookout during the Ottoman era. Sadly, public access to the tower has been restricted for safety reasons.  Many years ago, it used a special lighting system to share weather forecasts with the people of Istanbul.

Imagine a crystal ball atop the tower, pulsing with different colors. Blue signals clear skies, perfect for a day of sightseeing. Green signifies rain, a good excuse to explore the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar nearby.  A warm yellow glow indicates fog, a somewhat mystical touch to your Istanbul experience. And for those snowy days, a brilliant red will illuminate the tower, a vibrant contrast against the winter wonderland.

For a long time, only university students could climb to the top of the Beyazıt Tower.  The tower is situated on one of Istanbul’s seven hills, if you are lucky to climb the 180 steps you will see the entire cityscape.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Istanbul, be sure to add the Beyazıt Tower to your must-see list.  Though you might not be able to climb the tower itself, take out your phone and capture the tower (this is allowed).
