Vachova Street in the heart of Brno, Czechia will this summer treat visitors to the experience of a “shared summer living room”.  The street will operate as a pedestrian-only zone from May 3, 2024. It will remain so for the next six months.

Cozy seating areas and greenery will adorn the street from end to end. There is also children’s seating available making it family friendly. There will be a vibrant ambiance throughout summer as planned by local businesses.

The project is the brainchild of renowned designer Veronika Rút. She works for the non-profit organisation Naše kultivovaná města (Our cultured cities). “My vision was to unite the businesses on one street and create a shared summer living room. Inspired by similar projects in Milan and New York, we believe this intervention will be a huge success,” said Rút.

Moreover, Vachova Street was chosen because it has little car traffic leading to less disruption. It also has limited parking spaces making it ideal for pedestrians only. Furthermore, there are dozens of parking spots in the nearby streets. This boosts its convenience for those driving to the street.

Additionally, the organizers are looking to have something for everyone. The street prides itself on an array of shops and restaurants. The likes of boutiques, pizza places, and pubs. According to the organizers, “There will be children’s seating, soft drinks, and even an esoteric shop offering fortune-telling on opening day.”

Tactical urbanism has become a popular trend in some parts of the world and the Czech Republic is embracing it. This approach involves making meaningful changes to neighborhoods, towns, and cities. As a temporary measure, it also seeks to gather public feedback.

The Mayor of Brno-střed, Vojtěch Mencl commented: “Cooperation with local entrepreneurs and restaurant operators is the key to creating an attractive and functional urban space. We emphasize quality restaurant gardens, comfortable furniture, plenty of greenery, and safe pedestrian zones.” Quoted by praguemorning.cz.

“My goal is to spark a public discussion in our country – to make people think about how we use public spaces and their potential to add new value to our cities,” explained Rút.
