Callum Wilson’s Brace against Southampton fires Newcastle into Champions League spot

The England striker, who has five goals in his last three games and 15 for the season, came off the bench to help his side recover from a sluggish first half. Wilson does not want to be a super-sub, preferring to start with Alexander Isak in the front three. And it was Eddie Howe’s reshuffle that changed the game at halftime.鈥

Newcastle was terrible in the first half, with no control of midfield and facing defeat after Stuart Armstrong’s goal. The Wilson and Isak show was reignited after their midweek destruction of Everton. Isak, a Swedish international, pushed out left to harass the fullback. Wilson was in the front of the pack.

It resulted in three goals and a torturous second half for Southampton, who were ripped apart. Howe’s team has now won eight of their past nine games, and they have scored 13 goals in their last three. Amazing stuff.

January enrollment Anthony Gordon was given a rare start, and found himself in perilous situations but failed to capitalize on them. Wilson hooked the former Everton man at the break, and he teamed with Isak for the equalizer. Isak accelerated down the left and crossed low.

Another superb finish from England’s striker, who opened out his body and flicked into the top corner. In his usual tactical plan, Howe suspects that both Wilson and Isak will be unable to begin a game together. Both want to be the leader of the line, but Isak is also lethal dribbling down the wing.

Wilson scored again, but VAR declared him to be offside. He was, but were Stickley Park officials certain Miguel Almiron touched the ball? As Joe Willock charged forward, the young Saints were struggling to fill all the gaps.

Newcastle’s second goal came from a Kieran Tripper corner, which Sven Botman headed onto Theo Walcott for an unlucky own goal. Wilson’s second came in the 81st minute when Nick Pope surged forward, the Saint’s defense failed to clear, and Willock chased into the area. Wilson pushed forward, rounding Alex McCarthy.

He narrowly missed out on a hat-trick due to the crossbar, but was cheered up by St James’ Park’s performance of his “Oooh Callum Wilson” song. Newcastle were flat and one down at halftime after scoring eleven goals in their previous two games. On the halfway line, Romeo Lavia robbed Bruno Guimaraes and set Carlos Alcarez free.

With the Toon defense rushing back, he snuck Kamaldeen Sulemana clear down the right. He timed his cross perfectly, allowing the returned Stuart Armstrong to nip in front of Kieran Trippier and force home from close range. It was an excellent breakaway goal.

Ruben Selles’ team was devoted and organized, and they were ready to capitalize on Howe’s fatigue. That is until Newcastle’s super sub came on. The Toon currently has a strong chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Next up comes Arsenal, and another chance to make a statement.

This was a lesson in how next season’s European midweek games could play out. Howe requires a squad of fresh legs to introduce when the team runs out of steam. Despite an impressive first half, Southampton appear to be doomed.

Howe said: 鈥淲e want to win every game. The next one will be a great occasion for us. That is my only focus. I felt the second half would be different attacking the Gallowgate. We changed things tactically.鈥
