Chegg Announces Partnership With OpenAI to Integrate AI into Its Operations

On Monday, an official announcement came from Chegg, that it would be implementing AI services into its operations. Chegg is an American education technology company that provides various educational services to students.

As the company鈥檚 CEO said to Reuters, the educational software maker has combined its corpus of quiz answers with the chatbot鈥檚 AI model known as GPT-4 to create CheggMate, a study aide tailored to students.

“It’s a tutor in your pocket,” Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig said last week. It will be supported by Chegg鈥檚 extensive, tested, and dependable content library which will enable a student to have an instantaneous conversation with the AI according to their individual learning style.

鈥淐heggMate consolidates the best of simulated intelligence and Chegg鈥檚 understudy-centered mastery and will be solely accessible on Chegg鈥檚 foundation,鈥� said Dan Rosensweig.

The news of Chegg comes after several schools have explicitly prohibited the use and application of ChatGPT over worries about students using it to counterfeit papers. An example is the Los Angeles Unified School District which has blocked access to ChatGPT on its devices and networks pending more analysis. However, according to Chegg, this is a non-issue.

Chegg claims that its platform and the soon-to-come CheggMate primarily concentrate on subjects like math and sciences, which don’t have the same issues with plagiarism as essay writing. The company has also added that they will add a feature that allows instructors to limit and even remove responses by CheggMate to questions that they intend to use in tests and examinations.

Access to CheggMate is expected to begin in May (next month) 2023. According to Reuters, Chegg鈥檚 CEO was also asked if the application of AI to Chegg鈥檚 platform will lead to the company reducing its expert pool. To which he replied that Chegg already balances technology and humans. He proceeded to add that CheggMate likely will decrease its cost of content and boost profitability over time.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, stated in a press release on Monday that the company was thrilled to collaborate with Chegg to “improve the way people around the world learn.”
