London’s night-time economy is facing dire straits, with closures and revenue losses plaguing businesses at an alarming rate, as reported by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA).

According to data from NTIA, between March 2020 and December 2023, a staggering 3,011 night economy businesses shut their doors in London and its surrounding boroughs. 

This decline marks the sharpest fall for any English region. Specifically within London, 1,165 businesses were lost during the same period. Michael Kill, chief executive of the trade body, expressed concern, stating that these statistics starkly reflect the crisis gripping the sector. The aftermath of the pandemic, compounded by the cost-of-living crisis, has led to increased costs and a drop in footfall. 

Speaking to the , Max Golfar, head of music at Hootananny Brixton, highlighted the challenges, citing rising costs across the board. He noted a decline in attendance at the live music venue, with patrons spending less due to financial constraints.

Similarly, Hammant Patel Villaby, owner of The Courtesan restaurant in Brixton, painted a grim picture of the situation, describing it as akin to being on an unstable ship. Both Golfar and Villaby are urging the government and Mayor of London to provide more support. They specifically call for a reduction in the 20% VAT rate and continued reduction in business rates.
