London’s green and blue spaces have been a well-kept secret, but they are finally gaining recognition as a haven for wildlife and a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. With over 3,000 parks, 400 miles of waterways, and 8.4 million trees, it is no wonder that London is now being dubbed as an ecological centre by National Park City founder Dan Raven-Ellison.

Raven-Ellison, who is also a National Geographic Explorer, recently gave a guide to the on the best outdoor spaces in London for visitors and locals alike to explore. According to him, London is home to 15,000 species of wildlife, including more peregrine falcons than in Yosemite National Park.

One of Raven-Ellison’s top picks for viewing wildlife is the London Wetland Centre, located in southwest London. The centre boasts over 150 species of birds, including nationally significant numbers of gadwall and northern shovelers. Visitors can also spot water voles, dragonflies, bats, and sometimes kingfishers in the ponds, reedbeds, wildflower meadows, and marshes. 

“The centre was created from old reservoirs. It’s a good example of how London has been involved in rewilding for a very long period. People can come and see first-hand how a large urban area can be transformed to flourish with life,” says Raven-Ellison.

The London Wetland Centre is not just a place to view wildlife, but also hosts regular lectures and events focused on preserving Britain’s wetland animals. It was even featured on the BBC television programme Seven Natural Wonders in 2005 as one of the wonders of the London area, with a focus on the region’s parakeets. With so much to see and learn, the London Wetland Centre is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the city’s wild side.
