In the latest report by the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), it has been revealed that while litter levels in Dublin have presented challenges, there are also signs of progress and improvement. According to the survey, Dublin’s north inner city and city centre were ranked 38th and 39th out of 40 areas surveyed, with Galway Inner City – Ballybane receiving the bottom spot.

Conor Horgan, spokesperson for IBAL, highlighted the need for continued efforts to enhance the cleanliness of Dublin’s streets. He expressed confidence in the potential for further improvement, stating, “While some areas are facing challenges, we are also witnessing a positive trend in many parts of the country. This reflects the collective effort to address litter-related issues.”

The survey, conducted following the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme, indicated a nearly 30% decrease in can-related litter. Mr. Horgan emphasized the early success of the scheme and its potential for further improvement, stating, “The initial results are promising, and we can expect to see continued progress as people become accustomed to the Deposit Return Scheme.”

Evidencing the broader positive trend, the survey highlighted overall progress in cleanliness levels across the country, with no town labelled as a ‘litter black spot’ or ‘heavily littered’. Mr. Horgan commended the collective efforts made in cities and towns, citing the significant improvement compared to previous years.

The report signifies a step in the right direction for Ireland’s cleanliness levels, reflecting the commitment and hard work of communities towards creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment, particularly in the lead-up to the tourist season.
