Dublin has seen a significant rise in its ranking on Mercer’s 2024 cost-of-living city ranking, making its way into the top 50 most expensive cities in the world. The Irish capital has surged ten places from last year, now securing the 41st position on the list. This remarkable leap has left many wondering how it took this long for Dublin to break into the top 50.

Mercer’s cost-of-living city ranking compares 226 different locations across the world, measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 items in each location. These items include transport, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment. Among the top five most expensive cities in the world, Hong Kong has retained its top spot from last year, closely followed by Singapore, Zurich, Geneva, and Basel.

Notably, no other cities in the Republic of Ireland made it into the list, but Belfast secured the 87th position in the top 100. London also made a significant leap, securing the 8th position on the list, jumping nine places from last year, with New York finishing 7th. Major European cities that finished ahead of Dublin include Berlin (31st), Amsterdam (30th), and Paris (29th).

Interestingly, four Swiss cities – Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Bern – all secured a place in the top ten rankings. Housing costs played a major role in these rankings, with most of the top 10 cities experiencing increases of between 3% and 8%. Notably, while Dublin was ranked higher this year, the cost of living remains relatively stable, with prices still relatively low compared to other locations, according to Mercer.

Yvonne Traber, Mercer’s Global Mobility Leader, emphasized the impact of cost-of-living challenges on multinational organizations and their employees. Traber highlighted the importance for organizations to stay informed about cost-of-living trends and inflation rates and seek input from employees on these issues to effectively manage their effects.

The top ten most expensive cities in the world according to Mercer’s 2024 cost-of-living city ranking are as follows:

  1. Hong Kong, Hong Kong
  2. Singapore, Singapore
  3. Zurich, Switzerland
  4. Geneva, Switzerland
  5. Basel, Switzerland
  6. Bern, Switzerland
  7. New York City, USA
  8. London, UK
  9. Nassau, Bahamas
  10. Los Angeles, USA
