Dublin residents have been advised to secure their windows “at all times” over the next six weeks to prevent an invasion of spiders as the region braces for unfavourable weather conditions. Despite the inclement forecast, including heavy rain and strong winds, the recommendation to keep windows tightly shut is not solely due to the bleak weather but also to deter the influx of arachnids.

Homeowners are accustomed to a surge in spider activity during this period each year, leading many to encounter larger and more audacious spiders with greater frequency. While some individuals may not be perturbed by these creatures, those seeking a spider-free environment have been advised to keep windows and doors firmly closed, irrespective of the time of day.

Spiders tend to enter homes through open windows, primarily in search of mates during the “spider season” spanning from mid-August to early October. Male spiders, in particular, become more active in their pursuit of female companions, while the latter generally remain concealed within residences.

To avoid unwelcome arachnid visitors, sealing any small crevices, such as cracks in window sills, floorboards, and around doors, has been recommended. Additionally, spiders are known to seek refuge behind skirting boards and kickboards, making it essential for homeowners to address these potential entry points.

As gears up for the impending spider season, residents are encouraged to take proactive measures to secure their homes and discourage the presence of these eight-legged creatures.
