A Bord Pleanála has given the green light to the €1 billion Dart+ West project, marking a significant milestone in transforming Dublin’s rail network. The project, part of the wider Dart+ programme, aims to enhance the city’s travel infrastructure and improve connectivity for commuters and travellers.

The first phase of the Dart+ programme includes the electrification of the railway line between Dublin city centre, M3 Parkway, and Maynooth. This development will lead to a substantial increase in passenger capacity, from 5,000 to 13,200, accompanied by increased trains per hour in each direction.

One of the plan’s key features is the proposed construction of a new train station at Spencer Dock, which will enhance connectivity with the Luas Red Line. Additionally, improvements to Connolly Station are also in the pipeline.

The ambitious project will result in enhancements to bridges, improved connections for communities in Maynooth, Leixlip, and Castleknock, and the replacement of level crossings. Furthermore, the wider Dart+ programme aims to double passenger capacity to 52,000 per hour and triple the network’s length to 150km.

Despite the approval, the decision to forgo the construction of a new Dart depot in Maynooth has sparked criticism from the Dublin Commuter Coalition. Nevertheless, Irish Rail has assured that alternative proposals will be submitted to ensure the storage of the new Dart+ fleet.

With the project progressing into the construction stage in collaboration with the National Transport Authority (NTA), Dublin’s rail network is set to undergo a substantial transformation. Construction timelines and necessary funding approvals will determine the targeted completion of Dart+ West by the end of the decade.

The approval of the Dart+ West project marks a significant step toward a more efficient and advanced rail network in the Greater Dublin Area, promising improved travel experiences and greater connectivity for residents and visitors alike. Full report on .
