Before Heathrow and Gatwick, there existed Croydon; the biggest air hub in the globe back then. Constructed in 1920, this was the airport that first launched UK’s international flights. It is credited for being a major player in the development of global air travel after the First World War. It was also the birthplace of Air Traffic Control.

Then came the Second World War, and it was bombed. This happened in 1940, and it was one the city’s first raids. Although it continued its operations, it was officially shut down in 1958. It has since been abandoned until now, and interested visitors can now revisit the past at the Croydon Airport Museum.

The general public is invited to explore its former airport buildings with the limited behind-the-scenes tours. The approximate duration for each tour is about 45 minutes.  Admission is free, but visitors can choose to donate £ 8. Anyone who fancies to check in is advised to book in advance, since the visitor centre is open once a month. That means, tickets sell out quickly due to the high demand.
