Victor Wembanyama will miss the San Antonio Spurs’ final game of the season to rest a sore ankle from Friday’s stunning upset of the Denver Nuggets, the team announced Saturday.
The 20-year-old French prodigy, who is almost certain to be named the NBA’s rookie of the year, was ruled out of Sunday’s game against Detroit due to a right ankle injury.
The announcement means Wembanyama’s dazzling debut season in the NBA has ended prematurely, with his final act Friday’s 34-point performance in a victory over the NBA champion Nuggets.
Wembanyama ended the season with an average of 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.
He entered the NBA as the first pick in the Draft last year, with hype describing him as a generational talent on par with LeBron James.
Although the Spurs had another losing season and are currently at the bottom of the Western Conference, Wembanyama’s standout performances have impressed coaches, teammates, and fans.
On Friday, he led the Spurs back from a 23-point second-half deficit to defeat the Nuggets in an upset that upended the Western Conference race for the top seed.
His performance included an incredible scoring blitz in the third quarter, during which he scored 17 points in three minutes.
“It just makes every win feel even more special,” Wembanyama said following the victory.
“As a growing team, a young team, it’s big for us. We are going to need these kind of wins in the future.”
