An operatic retelling of the biblical story of Nebuchadnezzar II, the powerful king of Babylon who conquered Jerusalem, is set to captivate audiences in Prague this June. Verdi’s grand opera ‘Nabucco’ will take center stage at the State Opera on June 26th, 2024 at 7 PM.  This restaging of the classic production celebrates the birth of Verdi as an operatic master. Expect an emotionally charged music and timeless themes of war, betrayal, and spiritual redemption.

From personal tragedy, an operatic triumph was born. When Giuseppe Verdi composed ‘Nabucco’ in 1841, he was in the depths of despair after a string of wrenching losses. But the biblical story of Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest ignited Verdi’s creative fire. The Results; a soaring musical drama that solidified his place among opera’s greats.

The opera transports viewers to ancient Babylon where Nebuchadnezzar, portrayed as the unhinged titular character Nabucco, invades Jerusalem and the intrigues of his dysfunctional royal family unfold. At the heart of the conflict is an intense love triangle between Nabucco’s two daughters vying for the love of an Israelite prisoner.

.

As Babylon’s enslaved Hebrews languish in captivity, their transcendent “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” lament pierces the heart. This iconic musical number, with its stirring call “Oh my country so beautiful and lost!,” was nothing short of a patriotic anthem for Verdi’s countrymen yearning for an unified Italy.

Throughout ‘Nabucco,’ Verdi poured raw human emotion into every note, from Nabucco’s descent into madness to the treacherous deeds of his daughter Abigaille. The challenging soprano role taxes a singer’s entire dramatic and vocal range.

But it is in Nabucco’s spiritual rebirth that the work achieves its greatest emotional depths. After embracing the Israelites’ faith, the once narcissistic king finds redemption, liberating the captives in an inspiring finale.

Don’t miss this revival of Verdi’s first grand success, a sweeping musical journey from oppression to freedom featuring the combined forces of the State Opera’s acclaimed chorus, orchestra, and ballet company. Both epic and intimate, ‘Nabucco’ promises an unforgettable night of passion, drama and vocal fireworks on the historic stage of Prague’s architectural gem, the State Opera.
