The event on Paris’s Champs-Élysées is open to the public, but only 4,000 people will be granted access to the massive picnic.

It’s one of the world’s most famous – and well-traveled – streets, and now the Champs-Élysées is preparing to welcome delighted visitors for an entirely new event.

On Sunday, May 26, the Parisian avenue will be transformed into a massive picnic area, accommodating 4,000 residents of the French capital as well as tourists.

The Champs-Élysées committee created the event in collaboration with LG Electronics France, and lucky attendees will be able to gather around a giant, traditional red and white chequered picnic rug.

Each attendee will receive a free picnic basket filled to the brim by restaurateurs from the iconic Avenue eateries.

There is one catch: tickets to the event will be awarded through a ballot system, so not everyone will be able to attend the grand picnic.

This is how the massive Champs-Élysées picnic will work

The car-free picnic area, which stretches from the Arc de Triomphe to the intersection of Avenue George V at the other end of the Champs-Élysées, will be unrecognizable from its usual form as a bustling, traffic-clogged street.

The road will be divided into nine distinct zones, each featuring a different French delicacy and exciting outdoor games.

The 216-metre-long gingham picnic rug, which will stretch from rue Arsène Houssaye to Avenue George V, is expected to be a sight to behold.

Each square on the massive red-and-white checkered blanket can seat up to six people. The organizers have dubbed them “lucky Epicureans”.

Guests who win a spot on the ballot will be able to attend one of two sittings, either at 12.00 or 2.00 pm.

Given that the picnic will take place on a 4,212-square-meter area, it is likely that it will be recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest ever held.

Here’s how to apply for the opportunity to picnic on the Champs-Élysées

The picnic provides a rare opportunity to see the avenue transformed. The road has previously hosted a large cinema, but this is the first time a food-related event will be held there.

However, with only 4,000 tickets available, many keen foodies will be disappointed. If you want to throw your hat in the ring, act quickly.

Potential attendees must apply for tickets on the official Paris City Hall website .

Registration is open to everyone, but minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Up to six people from the same family or group can enter the ballot for the chance to picnic together. All entries will be entered into a prize draw, and those who win a spot on the Parisienne picnic blanket will be notified in May.
