“You Just Lied!” Elon Musk Tells BBC Reporter While Discussing Hate Speech On Twitter

For years, Elon Musk has been fodder for media outlets but his ludicrousness seems to have gone up a notch since he purchased Twitter. And what do you know, he鈥檚 only gone and found himself in a tug-of-war of sorts with the BBC.

On 12th April 2023, Elon Musk was questioned in a last-minute interview by BBC’s technology correspondent James Clayton. The interview was held at Twitter headquarters in San Francisco. In the interview, Elon and Clayton discussed an array of issues including the massive Twitter layoffs his position as Twitter CEO, and the labeling of the BBC as 鈥済overnment-funded鈥 on Twitter.

One of the most intriguing moments of the interview came when Musk and the reporter were talking about allegedly increased hate speech on Twitter since he took over. In the interview, BBC鈥檚 James Clayton asked Mr. Musk about the plans he had to tackle rampant incidents of hate speech reported on Twitter.

Musk provided a retort with several questions at the reporter. He said, “What hate speech are you talking about? I mean, you use Twitter. Do you see a rise in hate speech? Just a personal anecdote? I don’t.鈥

Mr. Clayton then responded, “Honestly, I don’t.鈥 Clayton went ahead to identify the reason that he doesn鈥檛 鈥榮ee鈥 any hate speech is because he only looks at his followers and does not use the For You page.

In response to Clayton鈥檚 answer, Musk said, “I’m asking for one example and you can’t give a single one. Then I say, sir, that you don’t know what you are talking about. You cannot give me a single example of hateful content, not even one tweet. And yet you claimed that hateful content was high. That is false, you just lied.”

That statement has received a lot of engagement in social media and outside as well. Despite the fact that Clayton did not provide a specific example of said hate speech, The Guardian鈥檚 Emma Brockes identifies some instances that prove otherwise.

She highlights a research study conducted by the Anti-Defamation League and the Center for Countering Digital Hate. According to the study, there has been a general spike in hate speech on Twitter in the period since Elon took over as CEO and owner of the social media platform.
