Commuters  traveling through southeast London should be aware of upcoming traffic disruptions as the Blackwall Tunnel is set to close for another weekend in September.

The southbound tunnel will be closed from Saturday, September 7th until Monday, September 9th. This closure is part of a series of weekend closures that are necessary to allow for essential maintenance and upgrade work in preparation for the opening of the new Silvertown Tunnel, which is expected to alleviate congestion in the area.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via the Rotherhithe Tunnel and other alternative routes. However, motorists can expect significant delays and congestion, especially during peak travel times. TfL has urged drivers to plan their journeys in advance, and allow some extra time to reach their destinations.

Alternative Routes

  • Rotherhithe Tunnel: This is the most obvious alternative route, but it is expected to be heavily congested during the closure.
  • Tower Bridge: This route is also likely to be busy, but it may be a good option for drivers who want to avoid the potential delays on the Rotherhithe Tunnel.
  • Dartford Crossing: This is a longer route, but it may be a good option for drivers who want to avoid the central London area altogether.

Notably, the 108 bus route, the only one crossing the river, will be temporarily split. It will run from Lewisham to North Greenwich on one side and Canning Town to Stratford on the other. Passengers will need to take the Jubilee line to cross the river, but will receive a refund for this journey. It is advisable to keep up with all updates on the Transport for London (TfL) for convenience.

The Blackwall Tunnel is a vital link between east and southeast London, and its closure is likely to cause significant inconvenience to many commuters and residents. However, TfL has emphasized that the work is essential to ensure the long-term viability of the tunnel and to prepare for the opening of the new Silvertown Tunnel.
