The ancient Turkish bath culture is being revived spectacularly in Istanbul. After years of painstaking restoration, the 500-year-old Zeyrek Cinili Hamam is reopening its ornately tiled doors to the public in late March as a museum showcasing the bathhouse’s stunning architecture and Istanbul’s rich hammam heritage.

This long-abandoned bathhouse, with its exquisite tiles and domed ceilings, is being transformed into a major new museum attraction in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district. The hammam’s meticulously restored interior is a fitting backdrop for learning about the rituals and traditions of Turkish bath culture. The grand reopening of the Zeyrek Cinili Hamam   marks the return of this 16th-century architectural jewel to its former glory after over 50 years of neglect and deterioration.

Turkish bath is an integral part of the city’s cultural identity and this ambitious project aims to preserve and promote one of Istanbul’s most iconic hammams. The Zeyrek Cinili Hamam is now also a living museum. A step back in time and experience the grandeur and majesty of this ritual bathing space.

A Journey Through Time

Upon entering the hamam, guests will be transported to the golden age of bath culture in the Ottoman Empire. The museum’s interactive exhibits bring the bathhouse’s history vividly to life, from the changing rooms where bathers once undressed to the scorching hot belly stone (gobektaşı) at the centre. Multimedia displays highlight the architectural marvels, including the intricately patterned iznik tiles that give the Zeyrek its famous “tiled hamam” name (cinili means covered with tiles).

Reviving Ancient Traditions

But the museum goes beyond just showcasing the physical space. There are special programmes to allow visitors to experience the traditions and rituals associated with the Turkish bathhouses. Techniques like cloth beating and massage will be demonstrated by experts. Visitors can even opt to receive an authentic hammam treatment in a restored section of the historic baths.

Cinili Museum in Zeyrek promises an unforgettable journey into Istanbul’s bathing past. This landmark destination is sure to be a highlight for travellers. Especially those seeking to immerse themselves in the city’s most treasured traditions. Don’t miss your chance to bask in the revived splendour of Istanbul’s latest must-see attraction.
