Does Wembanyama speak English?

Wembanyama’s talent is undeniable as seen by how he has taken over the basketball world. He is set to be selected first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft on June 22 and we can’t wait to see where he gets to land.

When he goes first, Wemby will be the first French international to be selected first overall and it will surely be a feat never seen before.

Currently playing for Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A, Wembanyama mostly plays out of France and joining the NBA would be a big chance that would need a drastic adjustment. One thing that usually stands in the way of international players is the language barrier whereby they find it difficult to converse with their team due to language barrier.

Wembanyama’s case is different though, things look like they are panning out his way and the language barrier is ruled out of barriers he might encounter during his time in the NBA.

His prowess in speaking English was seen during a courtside interview with ESPN commentators Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson whereby the lad fluently spoke English without straining a bit. This was mind-blowing to everyone compared to other players who have found it difficult in speaking English with such eloquence.

It is understandable for some players to struggle in speaking English because their native countries do not have English as one of their native languages. However, Wembanyama being that fluent is surprising given that English speakers in France are very few and it is not common to find fluent speakers like Wembanyama.

So the question remains, how did the 19-year-old French phenom learn English?

Just like any other player, Wembanyama decided to learn English once he set his ambitions for the NBA. He was determined to speak and understand English at all costs and for your typical athlete, they could have hired a tutor.

Not the case for Victor though, Wembanyama opted to learn English by watching English language shows and perusing social media posts.

This gave him an upper edge in understanding English and for sure he did pretty well in grasping the language concept. Wembanyama does not only speak but he also reads English.

Being conversant in English makes Victor who is NBA bound more than ready for the USA where English is their official language. As Wembanyama will be looking to transition to the NBA, he will not only be honing his skills on the court but also his English language.
