Elon Musk Defends His Statements That Have Been Labelled Antisemitic

Tesla and Twitter CEO, came guns blazing in an interview with CNBC, to defend his social media activity which has been controversial, to say the least. Elon Musk stated explicitly, 鈥淚鈥檒l say what I want to say, and if the consequence of that is losing money, so be it.鈥�

This statement was because of the uproar that followed an Elon Musk Tweet that was published on Monday. In the tweet, Mr. Musk launched an attack on George Soros, accusing him of hating humanity.

George Soros, who last week announced he鈥檇 sold off a modest stake in Elon鈥檚 Tesla, is a constant victim of targeted antisemitic conspiracy theories. While Musk鈥檚 tweet had no mention of Soros鈥� ethnicity, he was criticized heavily by many including the Israeli government.

In the Tweet, Musk compared Soros to the famous X-Men villain Magneto. Soros and Magneto, a fictional character, are similar in that they both are Holocaust survivors.

Following Mr. Musk’s post, the term “The Jews” was used in more than 27,000 tweets, according to Twitter trending data shared by David Saranga, the head of digital diplomacy for Israel. The Israel Foreign Ministry retweeted David鈥檚 tweet later.

David Miliband, a former Labor MP who served as Gordon Brown’s foreign secretary, referred to Mr. Musk’s comments as “totally disgusting” and demanded that he retract them.

Musk’s remark was also slammed by Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights organization that monitors and combats antisemitic acts.

Greenblatt tweeted, 鈥淪oros often is held up by the far-right, using antisemitic tropes, as the source of the world鈥檚 problems. 鈥淚t will embolden extremists who already contrive anti-Jewish conspiracies and have tried to attack Soros and Jewish communities as a result,鈥� He added. Musk responded to Greenblatt鈥檚 tweet and said, 鈥淗ey stop defaming me.鈥�

Another Twitter user replied to Musk in defense of Soros claiming he had good intentions that are manipulated and criticized by those who disagree with his politics.

In response to the user, Musk doubled down on his claims, 鈥淵ou assume they are good intentions. They are not. He wants to erode the very fabric of civilization. Soros hates humanity.鈥�

In an interview on CNBC, Elon Musk defended his statements regarding Soros. Musk asserted that he is entitled to tweet his views, even if doing so causes Twitter’s main source of revenue to dwindle.

He claimed he “didn’t care” if Tesla customers or Twitter advertising took offense at his provocative comments. As of yet, Soros has not commented on Musk鈥檚 comments.

In the CNBC interview, Musk was also questioned regarding his suggestion that a mass shooting had been part of “a very bad psy-op.” Musk, via tweeter, has constantly promoted the false claim the Texas shooter did not have a neo-Nazi ideology and that his online profile might have been a “psy-op”.

A psychological operation, sometimes known as a “psy-op,” is a military term describing operations taken to target and sway behavior. Musk鈥檚 鈥榖aseless鈥� take on the shooter comes despite major news outlets reviewing and verifying the shooter’s online profiles and Texas police confirming he had extremist and neo-Nazi beliefs.
