In recent years, there has been an increase in violence in society. As per a report by Le Figaro, over 90% of French people believe that insecurity has grown throughout the country. According to the latest Fiducial/Odoxa barometer, 55% of the respondents believe that insecurity has increased “a lot“. This has led to a growing distrust of the government among the people, with 72% of French citizens not believing that the executive can protect them from delinquency.

According to researchers, a clear majority of respondents (62%) no longer trust the government to safeguard them against terrorism. As a result, 68% of the population wants the government to allow a broader use of force than is currently permitted.

“Strictly regulated by law, the use of violence is, for some, too restrictive and prevents the police from being effective in their mission,” according to the researchers. The police and gendarmes agree with this position, as six out of ten “consider that, in certain cases, the use of more force than what is provided for in the texts should be tolerated”. This increased use of force is popular with LR (87%), RN (83%), and Renaissance (77%) supporters. Furthermore, almost unanimously (94%), the French support Gabriel Attal’s slogan “You break, you repair“.
