Ansu Fati is “not just any boy”

Ansu Fati’s father has come out to slam Barcelona for not giving his son time to play for the team under the Coach, Xavi, despite his impressive performances on the field.

Bori Fati — who manages his son’s career alongside agent Jorge Mendes — said Ansu deserves more minutes and has pledged not to return to Camp Nou to watch a match until the situation changes.

Speaking on Cope on Tuesday, Bori claimed, “If it was up to me, I would take him [to another team] but [Ansu] wants to stay at Barcelona. He does not want to sign up for another club, but I want to see him succeed. As a dad, I am angry. Seeing Ansu play so little winds you up a little bit and sometimes I think as a father, not a coach.”

Ansu Fati is considered one of Barcelona’s brightest young talents, having made his debut for the club in 2019 at the age of just 16. Since then, the 20-year-old forward has become a regular in the team and has shown glimpses of his potential with some outstanding performances.

Injuries had plagued his young career but after return, he has only a few games for the current season. His father Bori Fati believes his son deserves more playing time and he is disappointed with how Barcelona has managed his son’s development. Xavi’s team bolstered their forward line over the summer with the additions of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, limiting Fati’s opportunities.

He continued to express himself, “As a father, I am angry, yes, like any father. Because seeing Ansu play so little makes you a little angry. I tell them that we deserve much more. Ansu when he played before getting injured, there was Messi, [Luis] Suarez, [Ousmane] Dembele, [Antoine] Griezmann,” he told COPE. “It bothers me that they give him a minute, two minutes, or three minutes. The forwards that are there are phenomenal, but we are talking about Ansu Fati, from the Spanish national team, he is not just any boy. He’s a boy who left La Masía. If you don’t give him that, what are you going to give him? Ansu deserves much more, we’re talking about Barcelona’s ’10.'”

Barcelona has yet to respond to Bori Fati’s comments but the club Manager Xavi has previously defended his decision to limit Ansu Fati’s playing time, citing concerns over the player’s fitness and his long-term development.

Ansu Fati has a contract with Barca until 2027. In recent days, the player has reportedly met with the club to discuss his future, as he is unhappy with the secondary role he is playing in Xavi’s plans.

While Barca dropped out of the  Champions League early and lost a Europa League play-off against  Manchester United, things are looking rosier for them back home. Xavi’s side is 12 points clear in the league after a late Clasico victory over Real Madrid and holds a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Los Blancos in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Xavi’s side returns to action after the international break against La Liga’s bottom side Elche on Saturday. Fati is in contention for a rare start, as Dembele remains on the injured list and Raphinha will miss out through suspension.
