Is Paris’s 2024 Olympic Competitions a Breeding Ground for Dengue Fever?

As the 2024 Paris Olympics draw near, health experts are raising concerns about the possible spread of dengue fever. recently revealed that back in September last year, Paris saw an unexpected dengue fever outbreak, a mosquito-borne illness never before reported this far north in Europe.

With about 10 million visitors expected during the Olympics, some worry the event could become a super-spreader for this mosquito-borne illness. Mark Booth, a senior lecturer in Parasite Epidemiology at Newcastle University, has raised concerns about the risk of dengue transmission during the Olympics.

The sheer volume of visitors, coupled with the presence of the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquitoes, creates a perfect storm for potential disease spread. It’s quite concerning that if these infected visitors return home and are subsequently bitten by local mosquitoes, the virus could potentially establish itself in new territories.

The French government, however, is not taking this threat lightly.  According to Mr. Booth,  they are well aware of the risks and have taken proactive steps. These measures involve monitoring hundreds of locations in Paris that are potential mosquito breeding grounds.

The risk of getting dengue fever for individual visitors is relatively low, especially if they take proper precautions. These precautions include using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito hours. Health authorities in Paris have advise heightened vigilance in monitoring arboviruses, including dengue, during the much anticipated 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

Mark went on to conclude by stating that, “There will be no public health emergency in Paris because the event itself is the risk factor. Anyone living, working, visiting, competing, volunteering or even just passing through Paris during the Olympic period is going to be part of a huge natural experiment whether they know it or not,”

The stakes are high, and proactive measures are essential to prevent dengue from overshadowing the spirit of the games. Ultimately, the Paris Olympics sets the stage for thrilling competitions, inspiring displays of athleticism, and moments that will be embedded in peoples minds.

However, by understanding the the possible health risks and implementing necessary precautions, tourists and French authorities can collaborate to create a secure and unforgettable experience for everyone.
