For those who revel in the thrill of travel, as I do, the endless queues and tedious security checks at airports can be a frustrating ordeal.

However, for airports in Spain, this ordeal may soon become a thing of the past, thanks to the introduction of new technology in 2024.

Spanish airports are set to implement cutting-edge technology at all security controls, streamlining the scanning process for passenger electronic devices and liquids without the need for travelers to remove them from their luggage.

According to the Olive Press magazine, the airport operator, Aena will launch this innovative technology at Spain’s busiest airports, with Madrid, Palma, and the ever-popular Barcelona taking the lead.

The technology, known as the Explosive Detection System for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB), employs an X-ray mechanism that generates 3D images akin to those used in hospitals for CT scans.

This advancement couldn’t come at a better time, as the summer season rapidly approaches, and Barcelona is expected to welcome crowds of visitors as early as May.

Implementing this technology promises to significantly reduce queues at security checks, ensuring a smoother travel experience for all.

While the technology has not yet hit the market, Aena is actively strategizing and plans to roll it out within the next three years.

The operator has stated that €1.1 billion will be invested in airport security check systems during the decade leading up to 2028, underscoring the importance of this endeavor.

Until these changes are officially implemented, visitors will still need to adhere to the existing policy of removing all liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) from hand luggage and placing them in individual, transparent plastic bags before proceeding through the scanners – a regulation introduced after the 9/11 terror attacks in New York in 2001.Barcelona Restaurants Crackdown on ‘Loners’
