The iconic Notting Hill Carnival is just around the corner, but sadly, one of its most exciting traditions will not be present this year.  Its organizers have recently announced the cancellation of its pre-dawn J’ouvert celebration, and the disappointment among fans cannot be understated.

The carnival, which takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, is marked with several events, one of which is the J’ouvert. The vibrant early morning event, traditionally marking the start of the two-day festival, will not take place this year due to a lack of participating bands.

The organizers stated in a social media post, ‘It is important that those who were planning to attend to please refrain from doing so. We hope to see you again next year.’

J’ouvert, a tradition known for its energetic atmosphere and colorful revelry, has been a staple of Notting Hill Carnival for decades. Thousands gathered annually before sunrise to dance, sing, and cover themselves in paint and powder.

Are the main carnival events still on?

Yes. While the J’ouvert tradition will be missing this year, the rest of the carnival events on Sunday 25th and Monday 26th, August 2024 will proceed as planned. Organizers have expressed their disappointment and hope to revive the event for next year.

Not to worry too much if you’re a big fan of J’ouvert though. The Dutty Mas parade on Sunday afternoon will offer an almost similar experience with bands, music, color and celebration filling the streets.
