Liverpool are considering a move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Turning your back on Pep Guardiola may be regarded as the footballing equivalent of treason.

But this is what Kalvin Phillips must accomplish if he is to relaunch his career at the top level of English football.

Phillips appeared to have the world at his feet when he helped England reach the Euro 2021 final. He was one of the show’s stars and had a dream move to Guardiola’s English champions within a year. Phillips had his pick of clubs, but it was difficult for him to leave his hometown club, Leeds, where he had become an iconic character.

But the lure of playing for the best manager in the world and the chance to win big trophies was too strong to resist.

He headed to New York with friends to indulge in what one source described as “plenty of beers and pizza.” The upshot was he returned to Manchester in a condition Guardiola took serious exception to. He jettisoned him from first-team training.

It was the start of the end for Phillips.

Since then, he has only started two games, with Guardiola placing all of his faith in Rodri. Even more astonishing, Phillips has yet to start a single league game since joining City in a £50 million deal.

Even when Guardiola rests with Rodri, Phillips is still forced to sit on the bench, as is his norm.

The writing is now on the wall in big capital letters. Guardiola remains as tough as old boots when it comes to his stubborn and uncompromising approach to those he feels have let him down.

However, Liverpool may be able to help Phillips.

Phillips knows that if he continues where he is, he will have little chance of joining Southgate’s selection for the Euros next year.

He has no choice but to abandon Guardiola’s dynasty, and the Spaniard will not stand in his way.
