The Carnation Revolution (April 25th) festivities are here, and Lisbon’s main square is about to set the pace as they kick off tonight. Fireworks, concerts and video-mapping will be on at the Terreiro do Paço, and admission is free. Pin-shaped carnations will also be available on site.

Portugal is marking the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, one of the major political events that shaped the country’s history. The revolution that took place in 1974 saw the advent of democracy in the country, after a successful coup ousting the dictatorial regime.

Terreiro do Paco is one of the main stages of the revolution’s events, and tonight’s program will begin at 10 pm. It will feature several shows such as an audiovisual projection (videomapping) of the events, concerts and fireworks.

Music

These open-air celebrations will feature immersive experiences with more than 180 musicians gracing the stage. Among those expected tonight include the Lisbon Sinfonietta Orchestra, the Santo Amaro de Oeiras Choir and the Choir of the Artistic School of the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon.

Stories

Six young actors will narrate stories ‘about today’s Portugal and the path travelled’ under the directorship of Luis Varatojo. Attendees will be taken back in time as the show recalls the movement that overthrew the regime, and the socio-political impact on Portugal.

As the program closes at midnight, attendees are invited to hold onto the carnations and admire the sky as it lights up with fireworks.
