Flying is often hectic, and flying through one of the busiest airports is obviously bound to be more stressful. If you’re planning to travel via Heathrow soon, brace yourself with a little more patience-London Heathrow Airport (LHR) has been crowned the fourth busiest airport in the globe, according to the Airports Council International’s (ACI) latest World Traffic Report.

Heathrow was the seventh busiest airport in 2023, now surpassing Denver, Tokyo and Istanbul to claim fourth place in 2024.  This resurgence signifies a remarkable recovery from the pandemic’s crippling effects on global travel. While Heathrow previously held the top spot for many years, passenger numbers plummeted during the pandemic. However, 2023 witnessed a significant rebound with a staggering 79.2 million passengers passing through its gates, as reported by ACI. This momentum is projected to continue.

Heathrow’s success extends beyond the global ranking. ACI’s report confirms that the airport has reclaimed its title as the busiest in Europe, and the only European airport to rank in the top 10 busiest in the world.

While some European hubs grapple with passenger recovery, Heathrow’s strategic location and unwavering focus on international travel have positioned it for remarkable success. This achievement solidifies Heathrow’s role as a crucial gateway to Europe and beyond, ensuring its continued prominence in the global aviation landscape.

Atlanta remains the world’s busiest hub, followed closely by Dubai and Dallas Fort Worth. Find full rankings on the
