The Port of Dover, the UK鈥檚 busiest international ferry port and a vital gateway for the movement of people and trade, is in a massive crisis. Travelers at Dover remain in long queues to catch ferries to France after waiting more than 24 hours, although port authorities say the situation is improving for new arrivals.

A critical incident was declared overnight on Friday. Operators P&O Ferries and DFDS Seaways reported delays to ferry and coach services, citing bad weather and hold-ups at French border control as partly responsible.

In a series of tweets on their page, officials at the Port of Dover state, “Please be advised that due to high volumes & extended processing times at Border Controls, there are delays for coach traffic. We apologize for the inconvenience these delays may have caused to passenger journeys and thank all port users for their patience at this time.”

In another statement released on Saturday, the port stated, 鈥淲e know it’s hectic today and we want you to know that we are doing all we can to get all customers on their way as quickly as possible. We know this isn’t the ideal start to your trip, but our teams are ready to welcome you onboard once checked in.鈥

It continued, 鈥淒espite considerable pre-planning with our ferry operators, border agency partners, and the Kent Resilience Forum, and the success of similar plans for processing substantial numbers of coaches during the most recent half-term period, the other coach bookings taken by ferry operators for Easter have impacted operations for the port. The Port, ferry operators & agency partners strive to get coach passengers away. We apologize for the delays with border processing & will look to get you on your way as soon as possible.鈥

Later on Sunday evening, a spokesperson said that queues were easing and it took approximately two to three hours for coaches to clear the relevant checks and around one to two hours for cars.  DFDS said it would be operating a cross-Channel shuttle service, whereby all passengers would be shipped on the first available departure after they arrive at check-in. Several coaches stuck in the backlog are carrying schoolchildren on Easter holiday trips. Food and drink were provided to passengers stuck in the traffic.

According to Sky News, a port spokesperson stated, “This is not the first time there have been problems at Dover.  The port spokesperson said: “There is still the ongoing situation at the port, but both DFDS Seaways and P&O are adding additional departures overnight. Vessels usually have a longer layover at night but will be running back and forth to clear as much as possible.” “You can’t have every summer holiday, every Easter holiday, the same old problem. And so the government needs to get a grip on this and help people just trying to get away for a few day’s holidays.”

A government spokesman said: “The UK government remains in close contact with ferry operators, the French authorities, and the Kent Resilience Forum regarding delays at the Port of Dover. The port has advised that it remains busy, but the situation has improved significantly since Saturday, with coaches being processed much more quicker. However, we recommend passengers check their operators’ latest advice before traveling.”

While some speculations are rife about the delays resulting from Brexit, Home Secretary Suella Braverman on Sunday stated it would be unfair to view the delays as an adverse effect of Brexit. Result of Brexit, Home Secretary Suella Braverman on Sunday noted that She said: 鈥淲hat I would say is at acute times when there is a lot of pressure crossing the Channel, whether that鈥檚 on the tunnel or ferries, then I think there鈥檚 always going to be a back-up, and I just urge everyone to be a bit patient while the ferry companies work their way through the backlog.鈥
