City Gets First Trophy of a Potential Treble 

After defeating Chelsea 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Julian Alvarez, Manchester City has celebrated winning the Premier League.

Before the match against Frank Lampard’s Blues even started, Pep Guardiola’s team already knew they would win a third straight championship. The closest rivals Arsenal might have maintained their tenuous chances with a victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, but Taiwo Awoniyi destroyed them and secured safety for Steve Cooper’s team.

After qualifying for the Champions League final in midweek, manager Pep Guardiola shuffled his squad, and the City team was given a guard of honor at the Etihad Stadium. After the game, City’s players gathered to celebrate their victory because they had already been chasing down Arsenal to win the title before their victory on Sunday. While Manuel Akanji kept his spot, Stefan Ortega, Kalvin Phillips, and Sergio Gomez joined the Swiss in the starting lineup as Manchester City’s five summer additions. Alvarez, who was signed in January 2022, led the line while the fifth new player and top scorer Erling Haaland sat just on the bench.

The ex-frontman for River Plate gave City the lead over opponents who last won the league in 2016–17. The Argentine forward eluded Thiago Silva in order to receive a feed from Cole Palmer and shoot low past Chelsea goalie Kepa.

Twenty minutes later, Alvarez believed he had scored again, but Riyad Mahrez’s handball during the buildup resulted in the goal being disallowed. The winning players lifted the trophy as the championship celebrations began soon after the final buzzer.

“We always believed we could do this,” defender Kyle Walker told Sky Sports. “This group of lads are professionals and winners.

“Rest assured we are not finished. We have the FA Cup against our bitter rivals and the Champions League. We will celebrate tonight and then move on to try and create history. The treble would be fantastic but there is a lot of football to be played.

“To say we are up there with one of the greatest Premier League teams of all time we have to conquer some of that. To go and achieve that we could then start talking about being one of the greatest teams in the Premier League.”
