Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea reach an agreement for him to take over as manager

After lengthy negotiations with the Stamford Bridge club, Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to become Chelsea’s new head coach.

Since letting go of Graham Potter last month, Chelsea has been searching for a new manager. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake acquired ownership of the team last year, Pochettino will serve as the third permanent manager. Although nothing has been formalized yet, the Argentinian’s appointment should shortly be confirmed.

Pochettino, who has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer, became the front-runner after Chelsea spoke with Luis Enrique, the former manager of Barcelona and Spain, and Julian Nagelsmann, who was fired by Bayern Munich in March.

When Chelsea looks to rebuild after a challenging season, the former Tottenham manager will need to be patient. At Stamford Bridge, the 51-year-old will take over an overcrowded team. Chelsea has spent about £600m on new acquisitions in the last year, despite not playing in Europe next season. This summer, they will have to sell players.

After dismissing Thomas Tuchel, who is currently Nagelsmann’s replacement at Bayern, in September, Chelsea hired Potter from Brighton. Potter found it difficult to establish himself, and Chelsea, who risk finishing in the bottom half, eventually appointed Frank Lampard as interim head coach last month. After losing his first six games, Lampard won at Bournemouth the previous weekend and drew at home against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Pochettino, who made 20 appearances for Argentina, joined Espanyol, where he had played more than 250 times, as a manager in January 2009. A little less than four years later, he was fired yet took over at Southampton right afterwards. After keeping them in the league, he led them to an eighth-place finish in 2013–14, which caught Tottenham’s eye.

He finished third in 2016 and second the following year. Then, he led Spurs to the 2019 Champions League final, where they fell to Liverpool 2-0, and he was fired five months later. In January 2021, he joined PSG.
