(TfL) has announced that mobile payments will be arriving for the popular bike-sharing scheme this autumn. Currently, riders need to use the docking station terminals to pay for rentals using a credit or debit card. This new app-based system will streamline the process, allowing cyclists to unlock bikes directly from their smartphones.

This move comes amidst a decline in Santander Cycle hires, and aims to stop this trend. While the scheme saw a peak of 11.8 million hires in 2021/22, that number dropped to 8.5 million in 2022/23. TfL hopes that the convenience of mobile payments, coupled with the growing popularity of e-bikes recently added to the fleet, will entice more Londoners to choose cycling for short journeys.

Meanwhile, a has intimated the growing popularity of e-bikes and their significant preference over regular pedal bikes. Appreciating this reality, TfL also plans to add to their number of e-bikes for hire.

The exact launch date and app details haven’t been revealed yet, but cyclists can look forward to a quicker and more seamless rental experience later this year.
