Passengers travelling through Dublin Airport can now expect shorter security wait times, thanks to the implementation of new C3 scanners that eliminate the need to separately scan liquids and electronics outside of the luggage. This major improvement has been introduced in Terminal 2, although only some of the scanners in Terminal 1 have been upgraded.

While the new C3 scanners have revolutionized the security process in Terminal 2, confusion has arisen among passengers regarding the permissible limits for liquids and electronic devices. Although airport officials are urging customers to adhere to the 100ml liquid limit, there have been misconceptions about the implications of the new scanning system.

Travel writer and broadcaster Melanie May took the initiative to seek clarification from airport staff. In a TikTok video, she shared insights from her conversation with a scanner operator, revealing that in Terminal 2, all scanners have been upgraded, thus obviating the need to remove liquids and electronics from hand luggage. Additionally, there are no restrictions on the volume of liquids. Passengers are now allowed to carry items such as full-size deodorants and large bottles of water, indicating a significant departure from the traditional limitations.

However, in Terminal 1, not all machines have been transitioned to the new scanning system, thereby maintaining the older liquid restrictions. Melanie emphasized the operability of only four new scanners and the absence of a guarantee that passengers will undergo the new scanning process. Consequently, the airport continues to advise passengers to pack liquids in standard plastic bags, each container limited to 100ml.

Although the streamlined security process at Dublin Airport presents a considerable convenience for outbound travellers, Melanie cautioned individuals to remain vigilant, particularly when boarding connecting flights or returning home. Noting that not all airports have adopted the advanced scanning technology, she pointed out the possibility of encountering differing security regulations at other airports.

The deployment of the new C3 scanners at Dublin Airport is a significant step toward enhancing the passenger experience and reducing the complexities associated with airport security procedures. As travellers continue to adapt to this change, it is essential to stay informed and exercise flexibility, particularly when navigating through multiple airports with diverse security protocols.
