The live video “portal” connecting Dublin and New York has reopened after a temporary closure due to inappropriate behaviour. The continuous live stream, allowing users in both cities to interact, was switched off on 14th May, less than a week after its launch, due to incidents such as users displaying offensive content and disrupting the experience for others.

According to the BBC, Dublin City Council has announced that the portal will now operate during specific hours, from 11:00 to 21:00 local time in Dublin and from 06:00 to 16:00 EDT in New York. The council stated that the portal has attracted tens of thousands of visitors and received almost two billion online impressions during its initial operation.

However, to address the inappropriate behaviour, measures have been implemented to restrict physical interference with the portal. The Portals.org team has introduced a proximity-based solution to prevent individuals from obstructing the camera, triggering a blurring of the live stream for everyone on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Dublin portal is located just off the junction where North Earl Street meets O’Connell Street, while the New York portal can be found at the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street. These portals are meant to provide a sense of joy and connectedness, and the public is reminded that they are not to be touched or stepped on.
